UNITED STATES PATENT ALVIN, L. BINGO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COURT FILE-CASE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,384, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed August 12, 1882. (No model.)
ten of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Court File-Gases, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to cases having vertical overlapping compartments for holding files of legal documents and other papers; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device partly opened. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the upper part of my file-holder; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of portions of two of the vertical divisions of the case, showing the grooves in which the removable partitions and bottoms are applied.
Similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
A representsaeaseof any desired size, which I prefer to make with inclined front as shown, and drawer B in the bottom. The case A is provided -vvith a series of vertical divisionpieces 0 0, arranged upon the same incline as the froutofthecase and provided with aback ,D.
The division-pieces (1-0 are provided with parallel grooves c c, which are at such an angle that when the pieces G U are arranged in the case the said grooves will be exactly perpendicular, and they are also provided with crossgrooves at d, which, when the pieces are in position, will be horizontal, or at right angles to the grooves cc. The perpendicular grooves may, of course, be of any number desired, but I prefer to so place them that four may always be counted upon any horizontal groove, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. In the corresponding horizontal grooves d d, on the opposing sides of two of the divisions O C, I slip the ends of a small thin strip of wood, metal, or any suitable material, f, which forms the bottom of a compartment, and in the vertical groove 0 c, at the forward edge of this strip f, I slip a wider strip, e, forming the front of this compartment, which strip 0 extends past and below the bottom f, to form the back of the next compartment below, as shown in Fig. 2.
Should the compartment so formed be too narrow to hold a file, it may be enlarged to suit by withdrawing the front and inserting it in one of the grooves near the front of the case, at the same time inserting another narrow strip f to enlarge the bottom.
The case A is provided with doors E,which have a lock and key, and serve to keep the files always safe and free from dust. tional room may be obtained in small space by making these doors of sufiicient thickness to contain division-pieces and adjustable compartments formed in this manner, as seen in Fig. 1.
It will thus be seen that I am enabled to form a case capableof holding a large number of papers occupying butasmall space and very econominal in construction and convenient in use. The top of each file protrudes from its compartment sufficiently to expose the title indorsed upon it, and as the series of spaces are arranged uponan incline each file can be seen at a glance, the desired one selected, and Withdrawn without danger of disturbing any other.
The case is especially intended for use in a court-room, and when so used the main case and its doors may each'be used for a separate class of cases, and marked Common law, .Oriminal, Chancery, or in any other way most desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A file-holder consisting of the case A, having an inclined front provided with suitable doors, the inclined divisions O 0, provided with a series of vertical and horizontal grooves c d crossing each other, and the adjustable partition-strips ef, said strips being arranged in the horizontal and vertical grooves of the inclined divisions O to form vertical overlapping compartments for the reception of files or papers, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALVIN L. BINGO.
