'IMPOVEMENT iNBLACKWASHiNGh/IOLDS FOR CASTINGS.
Specification forxning part ol' liet-ters Patent No.2 "QQKS,A dated March 13, 1860.
To all whom, it may concern-.-
State of New York, have invented a new and useful Method of Blackwashingltetort, lipe,
and other Molds for Castings; and we do here by declare that the 'following isfafull, clear, and exact description oi' the sanidreference being had to the accompanying drawings, malring part of this'specication.. l v
Figure l is a vert-ical sectionot' a retort 'flask and moldy and the device i'orjblaclrwashing the latter. Fig. Eis an elevation ofthe piston and its attachments. Fig. 3 isahori'zontal section of the retort Aflask and `mold and the device for blackwashing at the .linel 2 of Fig. 1. I Fig. 4 is a topview of the.l blackwash brush above4 the piston.

The nature of this invention 'consists 'in'.
bla'ela washing the molds of retorts, pipes', or other castings by means of a piston attached to a hollow or otherrod; and having felt cloth or other porous materials seeur'ednext the ledges of its upper surface, and a brushvvabo'vc it corresponding withf the form o' .the mold, or by either the piston-rod and felt .cloth or other material or brush and rod alone,- in such amanner as to enable the 'blackwash to Abe more expeditiously and equally distributed 4over the surface ofthe moldthan bythe systern heretofore adopted for blackwashing.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvontion, I will proceed to describe its| construction and operation.
The sand mold A represented in the drawings is designed for part of a retort, and is formed in the flask in the usual manner. The
' latter is providedwitli flanges at its lower end for securing itV by clamps or other suitable means to the flanges of a correspondingformed boX, C, alittle largerinside than thc inner area. of the mold.
sired.. The piston D is made a slight degree smaller thanthe in'old, so -as to freelypass.
through the same, and the rod E, by which it is moved, is made hollow, for allowing the escape of the air from below, and has a-screw This box 'C is closed at the bottoni, and may be either deposited in a pitor secured on the surface oi' the earth, asdef I doubled pie-ee orstripo'ffeueiott, F fortui- Be it known that we, WILLIAM FERGUSON' and DAVID FEnousoN, of the city, county, and
ersuitable porous material vis secured ou the upper snrfaceo'f the piston D, next to anden* Vtirely around the edges of the samewhich cloth projects ashort distance beyond'the'said edges, so that wheninserted in theim'old from above its dexible edges will be,raised#tothe"i` position represented in Eig. l, ,and pressed against the inner snriace of the mold A, and entirely prevent the passage of vthe blackwash. Immediately above thepiston, and on short studs rising from the uppersurface-ot the saine, is secured a brush, @corresponding In forni with the n'iold.4 lts. block or frame is open at the center to admitfthe passage' of the blackwash, and, being attached to thestuds by screws, it is detachable at pleasure. This brush G may be made of bristles, hair, or other suitable elastic materiah and being larger than the mold, its outer portions' are pressed against thesaidlnoldwlien inserted therein,
and made' to'assume the position represented in Fig. 1'.'
` The operation. of blackwashing thev mold is as followsz, The piston D being'inserted, in the upper end ofthe mold so as to bring .the ilexible edges of the'felt cloth F ashort distance below the top'of the same, the 'blaekwash is .poured upon the piston, and simultaneoustherewith the said pistou and its attachments are enforced entirely throughvthe mold into the more enlarged spacerof the, box C below. During the quick passage ofthe piston through the moldvthe airbelow itis allowed to escape through the hollowr rodA E, Vby which it is guided, and the saturated felt cloth F or other 'material around the edges of the piston D and the brush (i are causedto press against themold with the required degree of force to thoroughly and smoothly blackwash its entire -inner surface.
screwed from the piston, and the flask B, containing' the mold A, unclampedaiid removed The hollow'rod Eis then unfv from the box. C below, as well as the piston` audit-s attachments and blackwash. v The use of the brush G may bedis'pensed with, and the mold blackwa-shed by the felt cloth F alone; 'but it is preferable to combine the two, as the elastic force with which the bristlesor other 'material of which the brush is forined is pressed against the mold smoothes `the blackwash, and enables it'to be pressed into the-corners more effectually than it would 1 This system of b fito ell kindsof hollow mo1ds,' -whetlferof--the `form represented inv the-drawingsor circuler; oval,- octagonal, or other shape, mid,4 'case f the mold contains-groove@ oriother ineql'mli-A `ties` the use of the brush Gis' indispensable to properly lay the bluck'xvash -overltheir surfaces; the piston-rod Eis madesolid be by the cloth aigue'.
