ROD CUTTING DEVICE f Filed Dec. 2o, 1954 United States Patent ROD CUTTING DEVICE Earl A. Hofmaster, Mankato, Minn. Application D'eembr zo, 1954, serial No. 476,174
' V1 Claim. (C1. 30V-102) My invention relates to an improved rod cutting device;'and, in particular, it relates to a novelv and im proved plierlike device for manually cutting copper rods o'r .the like. j
It is an object of my invention to provide a novel and improved rod cutting device, which is more simply operative and effective than previously known rod cutting devices of this type.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a plier-like rod cutting device comprising a pair of relatively movable jaws diverging outwardly from their attachment to an arcuate axially extending seat which is adapted to receive the rod to be cut; both jaws are adapted to be disposed in adjacent parallel relationship with the rod to be cut, and carry oppositely disposed heads which are laterally displaced from the jaws to position a cutting blade and a pressure rollerin cutting relationship with the rod to be cut.
These and other objects and advantages will be disclosed in the course of the following specification and claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view, with some parts broken away, of my novel and improved rod cutting device showing it in operable relation with a rod to be cut;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, as seen on the line 2--2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation, as seen on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation, as seen on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like parts are indicated by the same numeral:
My novel and improved rod or pipe cutting device, indicated in its entirety by the general reference numeral 10, includes a henri-cylindrical body 11 having a hemicylindrical inner surface 12 and a concentric outer surface 13. Inner surface 12 defines an arcuate axially extending seat, which is adapted to receive the rod 14 to be cut by the device 10. Formed integrally with body 11 and projecting generally longitudinally outwardly from one end thereof, is a fixed jaw 15. As clearly seen in Fig. 2, jaw 15 comprises an arm portion 15 which at its outward end 16 is joined to a head portion 17 and, as preferably shown, is formed integrally therewith. As seen in Fig. 2, head 17 projects generally at right angles to the longitudinally extending arm portion 15 in a direction generally toward the axis of body 11, which may be defined to be the axis of the cylinder of which body 11 is a part, to extend across the rod 14; and, as seen in Fig. l, extends generally inwardly from the outward end 16 of arm portion 15' to a surface 18 adapted to face in spaced relationship the adjacent outer cylindrical surface of rod 14. Head 17 has formed therein a slot 19 extending perpendicular through surface 18 and adapted to be disposed generally at right angles to the rod 14. A cutting roller 20, which has a portion Patented May 1, y1956 ICC carried within the slot 19 of the head 17 by a removable pin 21. Fixed jaw 15 adjacent its inner end 22 is cut away, as indicated -bythe numeral 23, to mount a relatively movable jaw 24 which is pivotally secured to the fixed jaw 15 by pin 25. Movable jaw 24 extends longitudinally outwardly from its pivotal connection with jaw 15 to be disposed in substantially common planes with jaw 15. Movable jaw 24 comprises an arm portion 24 and a head 26 secured at the outer end 27 of arm portion 24'. Preferably, head 26 is formed integrally with arm portion 24 and extends generally at right angles thereto across the rod 14 in the same manner as head 17 to lie in oppositely disposed relationship therewith. Likewise, head 26 extends generally inwardly from its connection with arm portion 24' to terminate in a surface 28 which is oppositely disposed from the surface 18. Head 26 has formed therein a slot 29 oppositely disposed from slot 19 and adapted to receive a pair of parallel laterally spaced pressure rollers 3l),
carried by head 26 by pins 31.
portion 15 is provided with an aperture 32 extending therethrough. A bolt 33 passing through aperture 32 has a handle head 34 receivable'in an enlarged portion 35 of slot 32. Bolt 33 at its opposite end 36 is screw threaded to be received in a tapped hole 37 extending through arm portion 24 intermediate its opposite ends. Bolt 33 adjustably connects the relatively movable jaws 15 and 24 to control the movement of the latter with respect to the former. Thus, movement of the handle head 34 of bolt 33 in one direction draws the movable jaw 24 toward fixed jaw 15; and likewise, movement of the bolt 33 in the opposite direction will move the movable jaw 24 away from the fixed jaw 15.
The operation of my novel and improved rod cutting device 10 is as follows:
When it is desired to cut a rod 14 or the like, jaws 15 and 24 are spread sufficiently apart by the proper movement of bolt 33 to permit an insertion of the rod 14 between the opposed cutting roller 2i) and pressure rollers 30. My device 10 is then easily positioned on the rod, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, wherein inner hemicylindrical surface or seat 12 engages the outer surface of the rod and the rod extends between opposed heads 17 and 26. Cutting roller 20 is positioned at aA point on the rod where the cut is desired to be made and cutting roller 20 and pressure rollers 30 are then drawn together by the proper movement of bolt 33 by turning handle head 34 so as to bring cutting roller 20 into cutting engagement with rod 14. The operator then holds my device 10 and the rod 14 together with one hand by encircling the outer surface 13, preferably knurled, of body 11 and the adjacent henri-cylindrical portion of rod 14, which is not engaged by the seat 12, and the operator with his other hand rotates the rod 14 to produce a circumferential cut at the point desired.
My invention has been built and tested and found to be a commercially practical and effective rod cutting device, which effectively accomplishes the aforementioned objectives. It will be obvious to anyone skilled in the art that my invention may be modified by many substitutions and equivalents and that this disclosure is intended to be illustrative only. Therefore, I intend' to be limited solely by the scope of the appended claim.
l/Vhat I claim is:
