UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH I-IINKS, F BIRMINGHAM, COUNTY OF WARWICK, ENGLAND} LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,327, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed January 16, 1883. (No model.) Patented in England May 13, 1889, No. 2,265, and in Belgium December 20, 1882.
To all whom it may concern application for German patent, dated 14th Det E E, of the burner.
cember, 188? and for Austro-Hungarian pat ent, dated 21st December, 1882,) of which the following is a specification.
In an application of even date I have described and claimed certain parts of la mps, having for their objects to facilitate the trimming and lighting of lamps and the filling of the oilreservoirs.
The present application consists of the further improvements, hereinafter described and illustratedin the accompanying drawingsdiaving the same objects.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations, taken at right angles to one another, of a lamp constructed according to my invention 5 and Fig.3 represents the same View as Fig.1 after the gallery and burner have been raised.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in Figs. 1, 2, and H O is the sliding gallery, and D is the sliding burner, the said burner being furnished with two external rods, E E, and two internal rods,
-F F, and the gallery 0 is furnished with two tubes, H H, for sliding upon the external rods, The internalrods, FF of the burner slide in guide-tubes B carried by the fixed mount B. The internal rod F of the made in ittfor the spring-bolt L, carried by the mount B, to engage with for fixing the burner in its depressed and raised positions, respectively, and the rod F is provided with a stopshoulder, K for the springbolt L to engage with to prevent the complete withdrawal of the burner from the lamp. Each of the outer rods, E E, of the burner D is provided with two notches, M and N, for the spring-bolts P P on the tubes H H of the gallery 0 toengage with forfixin g the galleryin its depressed and raisedpositions, respectively. \Vhen the gallery 0 and burner D are in the lowered positions, Figs. 1 and 2, the gallery 0 is fixed in that position by the spring-bolts P P, engaging with the lower notches, N N, in the rods E E, and the burner D is fixed in its lowered position by the spring-bolt L engaging with the notch I in the rod F;
, In order to raise the gallery (J for lighting the lamp or trimming the wicks, the springbolts P P are pulled outward by acting on their thumb-plates, so as to withdraw them from the notches N N in the rodsE E,and the gallery can now be raised into the position represented in Fig. 3, and is fixed in that post-- tion by the springbolts P P, engaging with the top notches, M M, in the rods E E.
For raising the burner the spring-bolt L I 3, the bolt L snaps under the shoulder K on the rod F and fixes the burner in its raised position.
To completely remove the gallery and burner from the oil-reservoir A, itis only necessary to press inward the spring-bolts L and If, when the combined gallery and burner may be lifted from the reservoir for cleaning or repair or other purpose,
To remove the, gallery without .the burner the screw-knobs E E on the rods E E are unscrewed, and the gallery untastened by pulling outward the bolts]? P, when the gallery may be lifted from the said rods E E.
Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent another arrangement for fastening the sliding gallerylastdescribed in its raised and lowered positions, respectively, Fig. 4 showing the gallery in its lowered position, and Figs. 5 and 6 in its raised position. In this arrangementl dispense with the spring-bolts PP and notches M M N N, and I use in place thereot'a double spring-catch fastening, Q It, at opposite sides of the gallery, the said spring-catch fastening somewhat resemblin g an ordinary umbrella-fastening. The said double fastening is situated in a longitudinal slot made in the lower part of the rod E, fixed to the burner D; or tubes may be used in place of rods. The catch or shoulder parts of the double spring-fastenin gs, when atliberty to move, project beyond the slots in which they work, as seen in Fig. 6. The bottom of each sliding tube H on the gallery 0 is slotted at H for the catches or shoulders of the bottom fastenings, Q Q, to spring into when the gallery isin thelowered position, Fig. 4, the catches or shoulders of the top fastenings, R B, being maintained within their slots in the rods E E by the outer tubes,HH, on the gallery. hen it is wished to raise the gallery (J the lower fastening ofeach double fastening is pressed inward. The gallery is thereby released and may be raised on the rods E E into the position represented in Figs. 5 and 6, on reaching which position the spring-fastenings are completely uncovered and the catches or shoulders of the upper fastenings, RIt, are projected outward under the bottoms ofthe sliding tubes H H, and thereby support and fix the gallery in its raised position.
In order to lower the gallery 0, the catches or shoulders of the upper fastenings, R R, are pressed inward, so as'to permit of the tubes H H sliding downward on the rods E E. hen the gallery has reached its fully lowered position the slots H H in the sliding tubes H H come opposite the lower catches, Q Q, of the spring'fastenings, which catches snap into the said slots and fix the gallery in its lowered position, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6.
The arrangements, Figs. 4, 5, and 6, may be modified so that the raising and lowering of the gallery (J may be made to raise and lower the burner D. In this modification the rods or tubes E E are prolonged downward, and are fixedto the mount B instead of to the burner, and tubes on the burner D are made to slide on the rods E E. The burner D and gallery 0 can be temporarily connected together either by hook-fastenings or by bolt or other fastenings. When the hooks on the burner are disconnected from the gallery, or the bolt or other fastenings'are withdrawn from the gallery, the said gallery may be raised and lowered independently of the burner. When, however, it is desired to till the oil-reservoir A, the burner and gallery are temporarily secured together by the hook or other fastenings. By now releasing the gallery the said gallery and the burner may be raised together and supported in their raised positions by the spring-fastenings R It in the a manner before described. When this arrangement for raising the burner is employed the sliding and fixing rods F F on the under side ofthe burner, and the springfastenin gs con nected therewith,(represented in Figs. 1,2, and 3,) maybe dispensed with. The burner and gallery in the arrangement represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 may be modified and booked and bolted together in the manner described with respect to Figs. 4:, 5, and 6, and the combined gallery and burner raised and lowered simultaneously when desired.
Having now described the nature of my invention and the manner in which the same is to be operated, I wish it to be understood that 6 I claim as my invention of improvements in lamps for burning light or volatile oils 1. In a lamp, the combination, with the burner, ofthe sliding gallery supported on rods outside of and supported by said burner, substantially as described.
2. In a lamp, the combination of the sliding burner and the sliding gallery supported on rods outside said burner, the latter being also provided with rods for supporting it in its 7 raised position, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the body of the lamp, of the sliding burner, rods connected therewith moving in fixed guide-tubes,catches engaging shoulders on said rods, the sliding gallery provided with guide-tubes that move over rods fixed on the burner, and spring-catches for fastening said gallery in its raised or lowcred position, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the vertical rods and guide-tubes, of the doublespring-catch having two acting ends, one of which acts to support the tubes and parts connected there- .with in. their raised position and the other to fasten the same in their lowered position, substantially as described.
5. In a lamp, the combination, with the fixed rods external to the lamp, of the sliding gallery and sliding burner detachably connected,
so'that the raising of said'gallery raises the burner also, substantially as described.
