SLEEVE O'R CUFF BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 274,245, dated March 20, 1883.
- Application filed August 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARD W. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Paulding, in the county ofPaulding and State of Ohio, have invented an Impiovement in Guft' or Sleeve Buttons, of which the following is a-specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in an adjustable cuff or sleeve button; and the object of my improvement is to provide an adjustable cuff or sleeve button by which the cuff or sleeve may be readily and quickly fastened without tearing or defacing the cuff or buttonhole, and which is both cheap and durable. I attain these objects by the combinations and mechanism hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a bottom view of my device; Fig. 2, a sectional view taken on the line w a" of Fig. l. Figs. 3, 4, and '5 are top views with the cover removed, showing in detail the several parts hereinafter more fully described.
Similar letters refer to similarparts throughout the several views;
A represents a metallic casing of any ornamental design, containing-the mechanism for operating the device, and is made square, having top, bottom, and sides. 0n the center of the bottom of casing A, on the outside thereof, projects a shank, a.
Extending from the outside end of shank a, up through it nearly to the top of the casing A, is a pivot or loose rod, D, bentrat right angles at its upper end, forming an arm, 11, about one-half the width of the casing A, and on the lower end of pivot D, and immediately below the .shank a and independent thereof,-
is rigidly secured the catchB.
0n the insideof the casing A, in the center and suspended on or encircling the pivot D, is a metallic drum, 0, made similar in shape to a capstan, the lower end being cut away, as shown at c c in Fig. 2, and at its upper end E, with one section or quarter of the circle removed. The arm 01 of pivot D projects in such a manner that when the drum 0 is revolved the broken segment of of the circular face E will strike and remove it.
On the inside of the casing A are small pins or projections e e, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4,
and as an ornament.
My sleeve-button, thus constructed, can be made of any material desired, and ornamented in any manner. p
The manner of operation is as follows: To fasten the button in the cuff, pass the shank a, with the head or catch B on a line with shank a, through the button-hole, pull the side of the chain F nearest the hand, which will turn thedrum O, and the edge of the circular face E will strike against the pivot-arm d, moving it until it is or pin 0. This movement will turn the pivot D, which carries with it the catch B, so that B will be at right angles to shank a, and the cuff will be fastened, and the several parts will be held the leaf-spring S. To unfasten the cuff the other side of the chain is pulled, which reverses the action, and the catch is brought back to its normal position, and may then be easily removed from the cuff.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'b Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a cuff-button, of the casing A, provided with 0 o and pins 6 c, with the pivot D, having right-angled arm cl and catch B,substantiall y as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. I
2. In a cuff-button, the combination of casing A, provided with holes 0 0, shank a, and
stopped by the projection,
firmly in position by the pressure ofshank a and holes.
.55 S, which rests against side in the form of a loop, ready for operation I pins 0 e, the pivot I), having arm a, catch B,
the drum 0, having segmental S, and chain F, all arranged and operating substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination, in a cuff-button, of a face E, spring casinghavingashank attached thereto, apivotposition parallel with or at right angles to the to pin extending through said shank and into shank, substantially as described.
the casing, a shoe or catch secured to the end In testimony whereof I affix my signature in of the pivot-pin and adapted to rotate in conpresence of two witnesses.
tact with the end of the shank, a drum surrounding the inner end of the pivot-pin, a l WARD W. YOUNG.
spring for holding said drum in position, and Witnesses:
means for rotating the drum and pivot for the JAMES. P. GASSER, purpose of turning the shoe or catch into a l A. N. KEYS.
