.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. THAYER AND. FRANKLIN A. SMITH, Jlt, OF PROVIDENCE, R. I.
TOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,232, dated March 20, 1883.
- Application filed November 8, 1882. (No model.) i
pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates toan improved device for holding hand instruments or tools-such as pinchers, due-whereby said tools may be operatedby means of a treadle or other suitable power-connection.
Our invention consists ofa portable frame or holder, made of metal or other material, in
connection with a suitable clamping device which permits of theinstrument being readily attached to the holder, or detached therefrom when desired.
it is found in practice that a portable detachable holder for setting -instrun1ents pinchers or other analogous tools-which can be readily attached to atable or bench in stores or workshops is very desirable. The object of our invention is to produce such a holder which will retain such tools, and in a com paratively inexpensive manner.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical front elevation of our invention, having a setting-instrument attached, and showing a portion of the clamping device in section.
. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same,
with instrument, &c., removed. Fig. 3 represents details of the clamping device.
A represents the frame or holder, which is preferably made of iron, having arms or projections a a at its upper end. Said arms are of a V form on top, and are designed to receive and retain the arm or handle of any hand-instrument when placed therein, in connection with the upper clamping-piece, B, the under side of which has also a V-shaped groove thereper end of said bolt terminating in an eye or ring provided with a cup-shaped recess, d, at the upperinner side of said ring.
The holder or frame A is secured to the table or bench by means of screws passing through the legs or feet of said frame. The frame is further provided with a central hole through which the clamping-bolt U loosely passes.
E represents an extension-piece, which is attached to the free arm or handle of the instrument. Said piece has connected thereto the rod or connection g, which latterin turn is attached to a suitable treadle or other device at its lower end, whereby the same may be operated by foot-power, 8w. Aspring, H, serves to open the instrument when the pressure upon bench, one handle of the tool is placed in the V-groove of the holderat a a, and through the eye of the clamping-bolt (J, after which the upper clamp, B, is alsoinserted, the V-groove thereof resting upon theupper side of the toolhandle when the projection b of the clamp B is brought in contact with the corresponding recess in the eyebolt, and the whole clamped firmly together by means of the nut D, the projection b and its recess forming a self-adjusting clamping device for the tools. By attaching the extension-pieceE to the end of the free handle the instrument is then made ready for use. piece E and attach the connection 9 direct to the handle. We would not confine ourselves strict] y to the foregoing method of clamping, &c.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The tool-holder herein described, consisting of the frame A, having arms a a, clamp B, provided with the projection 11, and clamping-bolt O, the latter adapted to receive and We may dispense with the retain the clamp B, the whole arranged and In testimony whereof we have affixed our 10 operated substantially as shown and designatnresin presence of two witnesses. scribed.
2. The combination of the tool-holder con- JAMES F. THAYER. sisting of the frame A, clamp B, and eyebolt FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR. 0, provided with a nut, D, and spring H, with a hand-instrument having an extension- Witnesses: piece, E, attached to the free arm of the same, GEO. W.
