Beit known that we, ALBERT E. BROWN, a resident ofBrookiield, in the county of Madison, and CHARLES H. RHoDEs, a resident of Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer, State of New York, citizens ofthe United States, have invented a new and Improved Clamping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relatesto clamps such as vused by silversmiths or goldsmiths in delicate soldering operations or similar work connected With their arts.
The invention is intended especially to be used in connection with the repairing of the frames of spectacles, eyeglasses, delicate chains, or similar articles. While the invention is intended especially for use in the connection suggested, it should have a wide general usefulness in the arts where similar functions are to be performed.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter and definitely set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. A,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the device representing a pair of spectacle frames held therein. Fig. 2 is substantially a central section of the device, certain parts, however, being shown substantially in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken substantially upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, this view being upon an enlarged scale. tReferring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the frame of the device, which comprises an elongated body 2, whic'his provided with laterally-disposed arms 3 and 4', which project forwardly therefrom, as shown. As indicated, the arm 4 is disposed at one extremity -of the body 2, and the arm 3 is near the lother extremity. From this arrangement adjacent to the arm 3 the body 2 has a projecting extremity 5. To this extremity 5 there is attached a pivoted handle 6, as shown. At a suitable point, preferably near the handle 6, the rear edge of the body 2 is provided with a downwardly-projecting iin or wing 7, enabling the frame to be mounted when desired in a vise or similar clamp.
Upon the upper face of the arms 3 and 4, clamping-plates 8 and 9 are placed, and these plates conform substantially to the shape of the arms, as indicated, the extremities being reduced in width, as shown, and provided with claws or jaws 10, forming clamping-recesses 11 therebetween.
Studs 12 are carried by the arms 3 and 4, and project upwardly therefrom, passing through openings 13 in the clamping-plates, as indicated. Upon these studs thumb-nuts 14 are mounted, the same having milled heads, as indicated, and having laterally-disposed flanges 15 abutting the upper faces of the clamping-plates. These thumb-nuts are retained in position upon the clamping-plates by means of undercut keepers or keeperrings 16, which are formed upon the upper faces of the clamping-plates, as indicated. At their rear extremities the clampin -plates 8 and 9 are provided with -downwar ly-projecting tails or spurs 17, which pass through openings 18 in the body 2 of the frame, as indicated, and the lower extremities of these tails are enlarged by crimping the same, as indicated at 19. It should be stated at this point that these tails in connection with the openings 18 operate to guide the clamping-- plates 8 and 9, so as to adapt the arms 3` and 4 and the clamping-plates 8 and 9 to receive therebetween articles or spectacle-frames of various thicknesses.
At substantially the middle point of the body 2 an adjustable arm 2O is attached in a manner which will be described more fully hereinafter, referring especially to Figs. 1 and 3. This arm 20 carries at its outer extremity a cup 21, the same being pivotally attached at 22 by means of a clamping-nut 23. From this arrangement it will appear that the angular position of the cup with respect to the arm at its extremity may be readily adjusted. In its construction this cup 21 comprises an open body, as shown, which is preferably formed with an inwardly-turned lip or flange 24 at its upper edge, the interior of the cup being :filled with a suitable non- IOO .l t understood.
1 Means for mounting the adjustable arm 2O .will now be described. For this purpose` at substantially the middle point of the body 2 the" same is provided with an opening 27, which is preferably of angular form in order to receive an angular hub 28, which is integral with a threaded sleeve 29, the body of which is disposed above the body 2, as indicated. The hub 28 and the opening 27 are preferably of square form. The sleeve 29 is preferably provided with a bore 30, through which passes downwardly a stud 31, the same having an enlarged head 32, which limits the downward movement thereof. As indicated most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, the stud 31 extends well below the body 2. It is received vwithin the bore 33 of a swivel-head 34. This swivel-head has a substantially circular body 35, which is provided with a circumferential groove 36, which is preferably substanti `tially V-shaped, as indicated. The body 35 is cut away above, so as to form a horizontal clamping face 37, which abuts against the under side of the body 2, as shown. At opposite points the wall of the swivel-head 34 is provided with recesses or slots 38, which extend downwardly from the upper face 37 of the same, as shown. and this pin 39 supports a stirrup 40 by means of upwardly-extending wings 41, constituting the sides thereof; The transverse member or body 42 of this stirrup affords means for attaching the arm 20, referred to above. To this end the arm 20 is preferably substantially V-shaped in section, so as to conform to the configuration of the peripheral groove 36 of the swivel-head 34. In order to enable the swivel -head 34 and the arm 20 t0 be clamped in fixed positions, a clamping-lever 43 is provided, the same having a threaded hub 44, which receives the threaded sleeve y 30, as will be readily understood.
In operating the device when constructed in the preferred form (shown in Figs. 1 to 3) the work to be operated upon will be clamped in the aws 10 or between the clamping-plates 8 and 9 and the arms 3 and 4 in the manner In this figure the spectacle frames, with lenses removed, are held between the clamping-plates and the arms, the studs in the arms preferably passing up through the approximate centers of the openings occasioned by the removal of the lenses, as shown. It should be understood that the cup or refiector 21 may be clamped in any desired position upon the extremity of the arm 20, so as to reiiect the radiating heat back upon any desired point in the frame of the spectacles. The angular position and the longitudinal position of the arm 20 could be adjusted by means of the clamping-lever 43. Adjustments of the angular position of the arm 20 with respect to the horizontal axis would be obtained by moving the same, together with the stirrup 40, -into different relations with respect to the swivel-head 34, rotating the parts upon the pin 39, as will be readily understood. The parts are shown in adjusted position in the dotted outline in Fig. 2. In clamping the parts by means of the clamping-lever 43 it should be understood that the pivotal mountn ing of the stirrup 4() enables the rear portion of the arm 20 -to be clamped upon the swivelhead 34 at any position in the peripheral groove 36. As the lever 43 is applied to clamp the parts the swivel-head 34 will be pressed upwardly by the stirrup and the arm, so that the same force which clamps the arm to the swivel-head will clamp the swivel-head to the body 2. In some operations the device may be held by means of the handle 6, or where desirable it can be more permanently secured by means of the fin 7, which would be clamped in a vise, as suggested above.
In Figs. 4 and 5 a modified construction for mounting the cup of the reflector is shown. With this form a simple swivel-- head 45 is provided, which is rotatably mounted in the body 2, the connection at this point including a suitable washer 46 to reinforce the joint, as will be readily understood. As indicated, the body of the swivel-head 45 is disposed below the frame 1, and to it there is attached by a suitable pivot-pin 47 a sectional arm 48, said arm comprising sections 49, jointed together at 50. The outer section 49 makes a pivotal connection at 51 with a stud 52, which projects from the body 53 ofthe refiector, as shown. In practice allthe joints of the arm 48 would be stiff, so as to present a substantially frictional resistance to movements thereof, from which arrangement the parts may readily be adjusted into different positions, maintaining themselves in any desired relation, as will be readily understood. If it is found necessary, means may be provided in practice for adjusting the frictional resistance at these joints.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to .secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination, a frame comprising a body having forwardly projecting arms,

clamping-plates coperating with said arms, said clamping-plates having spurs projecting laterally therefrom, said frame having openings through which said spurs pass, a reflector, and means for attaching the same to said frame.
2. In combination, a frame comprising a body withforwardly-projecting arms, a pair of clamping-plates attached to said arms and coperating therewith, threaded studs carried by said arms, thumb-nuts carried by said clamping-plates and received upon said studs, means for attaching said thumb-nuts by fianges, means for guiding said clampingplates upon said frame, an adjustable arm attached to said frame, and a reflector carried upon said arm.
3. ln combination, a frame comprising a body with forwardly-projecting arms, clamping-plates attached to said arms and coperating therewith, a handle carried by said frame, a fin extending from said frame and adapted to be secured in a vise, and a reflector supported upon said frame.
4. In combination, a frame comprising a body with plates attached to said body, the plates having recesses adapted to receive thumb-nuts, thumb-nuts having faces adapted to abut against said plates, undercut keepers on the plates adapted to receive said thuinb-nuts in conjunction with said recesses, and laterally-disposed flanges formed on said thumb-nuts abutting the innerv surface of said keepers and adapted to be retained thereby.
5. In combination, a frame comprising a body with forwardly-projecting arms, a pair of clamping-plates mounted upon said arms, said arms having threaded studs passing upwardly through the said plates, thumb-nuts carried by said plates and seating upon said studs, said clamping-plates having laterallyprojecting spurs, said frame having openings through which said spurs pass, said body having a downwardly-projecting fin formed at an edge thereof, said body further having an extension beyond said fin and a pivoted handle attached to said extension, and a reflector supported upon said frame.
6. A clamping device comprising a frame with a swivel-head attached thereto, an arm making an adjustable connection with said. swivel-head means for simultaneously clamping said swivel-head and arm, and a reflector carried by said arm.
7. Aclamping device comprising a frame, a swivel-head rotatably mounted on said frame, said swivel-head presenting a face adapted to abut against said frame and having a circumferentially-disposed face, an arm resting against said last face, a member adapted to force said arm against said swivel-head in the direction of said frame, clamping-plates cooperating with said frame and a reflector carried by said arm.

9. A clamping device comprising a frame, a swivel-head rotatably mounted against the face of said frame and presenting a circumferentially-disposed face, an arm adapted to rest against said last face, a stirrup adapted to maintain said arm against said circumferential face, means for drawing said. stirrup in the direction of said frame, and a reflector carried by said arm.
10. A clamping device comprising a frame, a swivel-head rotatably mounted against the face of said. frame and presenting a circumferentially-disposed face, an arm adaptedI to rest against said last face, a stirrup adapted to maintain said arm against said circumferential face, means for drawing said stirrup in the direction of said. frame, and a reflector carried by said arm.
