DEVICE FOR LOADING CATTLE ON RAILWAY-CARS.
` SPEOIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,192, dated March 20, 1883.
Application led January 30, 1883. (No model.)
f exact'description of the invention, which will enable others'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specitication, and in which- Y Figure 1 is a side view of our stock-loading chute. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the end of the windlass and means for operating it, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the upper part of the platform-railing and the sliding cage.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Our invention has relation to chutes forload.
' ing cattle on stock-cars; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of Jf he same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter ,A indicates the inclined plane of the chute,
leading up to the platform B, which former is provided with rails G on the sides, and crossstrips D to present better foothold for the cattle. VThe platform consists of two longitudinal timbers,E, resting and fastened upon cross- 'pieces F betweenthe supporting-posts, in
which timbers are journaled four or more friction-rollers, G.
H is a sliding cage or bridge, which is provided at its bottom with two longitudinal metallic rails, I, which slide upon the rollers Gr,
and is provided at its sides with rails J, the top ones, K, of which are provided upon their edges with rollers L, which roll upon the under side of two metallic ways, M, extending longitudinally between the top of the posts N, which -support the'platform and its side rails. By having the cage rolling upon the friction- -rollers G and providing it at its topwith the rollers L, rolling against the ways M, the cage may be extended with comparatively little labor, and the upper ways will prevent the end of the cage from tilting downward if the carplat'form is lower than the chute. The cage is operated by-means of a windlass, O, jour Jaled under the platform in bearing P, to which four or more or less ropes or chains, Q, are fastened, the ends of which are fastened to the under side of the bottom of the cage, two at drawn-back by turning the windlass in opposite directions. The windlass may be turned by a crank, R, upon its shaft, or it may be turned by a person standing on the chute by means of a vertical shaft, S, journaled in bearings in the side rails of the platform, and having a hand-wheel, T, upon its upper end. The lower end of this shaft is provided with a beveled pinion', U, which engages a similar pinion, V, upon the shaft of the windlass. This pinion U slides upon the vertical shaft' S, while it is made to turn with it by a feather, W, upon the shaft tting into an inner groove, X, in the pinion. The upper side ofthe pingroove of which a bifnrcated lever, Z, eX- tends, by means otwhich the pinion may be thrown out of gear when the crank is' to be used, while by dropping'the pinion into gear the cage maybe operated by the hand-wheel.
Having thus described our invention, we claim` and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a stock-loading chute, the platform having bottom rollers, Gr, and top ways, M, in combination with the cage having bottom rails, I, and upper rollers, L, and means for operating it, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the sliding cage H, having ropes or 4chains Q, fastened at both ends of its bottom, with the windlass O, havengage pinion V, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The herein-described stockfloading chute,
plane A, bottom rollers, Gr, and top ways, M, cage H, having bottom rails, 1, top rollers, L,
ion is provided with a fianged neck, Y, in the ing crank R and pinion V, and the vertical' shaft S, having sliding pinion U, adapted to consisting of the platform B, having inclined each end, so that the cage is extended or and chains or ropes Q, Windlass 0, having crank R and pinion V, and vertical shaft S,
having pinion U and means for engaging and l disengagng it, .allV constructed and combined 5 substantially as and for thepurpose shown and set forth. y
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto axed our signa tures in presence of' two witnesses.`
