Claims. (Cl. 46-124) This invention relates to toys of the type wherein an object, such as a bird or animal is suspended between spring arms and mounted whereby contracting and expanding movements of the arms cause an object to move upwardly and downwardly representing a bird in flight.
The `purpose of this invention is to provide a spring actuated toy adapted to be operated with one hand wherein an object suspended between elements of the toy may be moved vertically with the length of travel controlled by the hand of theoperator.
Various types of objects have been suspended by rubber bands and other elements between arms urged outwardly by spring inherent in Athe arms, however, rubber bands, or similar elements provide comparatively loose connections and it is difficult to control the movement of the object. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an object suspended between spring arms with parts of the object hinged to the arms and also hinged to the body of the object and wherein the movement of the object is controlled by spring elements.
. The object of this invention is to provide an activated toy of the type having wings hinged to a body wherein the wings are urged toward extended positions by spring action inherent in the arms and to positions above and below the arms by an additional spring member.
Another object of the invention is to provide an activated toy of the type having a body suspended between spring actuated arms in which positive connections are provided between the arms and toy.
A further object of the `invention is to provide an activated toy including combinations of spring elements for controlling movements of a body between arms, in which the toy is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in View the invention embodies a body having wings hinged to the sides thereof with arms of resilient material hinged to the wings and with the position of the body in relation to the arms controlled by a spring.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with `the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a View looking upwardly toward the under side of the toy illustrating the toy with the wings extended and with bearing elements on the wings shown in section.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the toy shown in Fig. l with the arms contracted and with part of one of the wings broken away and shown in section.
Figure 3 is a cross section through the toy taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l showing the toy with the wings extended.
Figure 4 is a cross section, similar to that shown in Fig. 3 showing the toy with the wings contracted.
Figure 5 is a plan view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 with parts of the body broken away and shown in section and illustrating a modification wherein springs are incorporated in the hinges connecting the wings to the body.
Figure 6 is a cross section taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 5, with the parts shown on an enlarged scale also illustrating the springs in the hinges connecting the wings to the body.
Figure 7 is a plan view, similar -to that shown in Fig. 2 illustrating a further modiiication wherein the wings are suspended from the body with fiat spring elements.
Figure 8 is a cross section taken on line 3 8 of Fig. 7 also showing the wings connected to the body with ilat spring elements and with parts of the wings broken away.
Figure 9 is a plan view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 illustrating a further modification wherein the wings are hinged on spring arms and the body is carried by a spring actuated bar.
Figure 10 is a side elevational view showing the device as shown in Fig. 9 with part of one of the wings broken away and showing the spring elements contracted.`
. Figure 1l is a side elevational View similar to that shown in Fig. 10 illustrating the positions of the parts with the mounting elements expanded vertically and with part of one of the wings broken away.
Figure l2 is a cross section taken on line 12-12 of F ig. 9 showing the wings contracted, with the body moved upwardly.
Figure 13 is a similar section illustrating the positions ofthe parts with the body moved downwardly.
Figure 14 is a perspective View showing the spring arms of Figs. 9 and l0 and illustrating a further modiiication wherein the arms are carried by a spring element.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved activated toy of this invention includes a body 10 having wings 11 and 12 hinged to the sides with the wings hinged to spring arms 13 and 14, respectively and with thewings urged toward the contracted positions with a spring 15.
ln this design the wings are formed, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 with upwardly extended intermediate sections and with the arms 13 and 14 hinged to the intermediate sections of the wings by bearing elements 16 and 17, respectively.
The inner edge of the wing 11 is provided with hook elements 18 which extend through eyes 19 threaded into the body 10and the wing 12 is provided with similar hook elements 20 that extend through eyes :21 threaded in the opposite side of the body.
The spring 15 extends through an opening 2l in the body 10 and the ends ofthe spring are secured to the wings 11 and 12 with eye bolts 22 and 23, respectively. The inner ends of the wings are provided with slots 24 and 25 through which the spring 15 extends, particularly as illustrated in Fig. 4 and as the arms 13 and 14 are pressed together to the position shown in Fig. 4 the ends of the spring 15 bend upwardly.
The ends of the arms 13 and 14 are provided with upset sections 26 and 27 and similar parts 281 and 29 are provided on the arms at the inner ends of the bearing elements whereby the wings are retained in position on the arms.
In the design illustrated in Fig. 5 a body 30` is provided with wings 31 and 32 and the wings are pivotally mounted in the body with pins 33 and 34, respectively. The pins extend through extensions at the sides of the wings and springs 35 and 36 which extend around the pins are positioned in recesses 37 and 38, respectively in the ends of the wings.
The ends 39 and 40 of the springs bear against the upper surfaces of the wings and ends 41 and 42 bear against the upper surface of the body whereby the springs urge the wings downwardly.
The wings 31 and 32, of this design are hinged to spring arms 43 and 44, similar to the arms 13 and 14 with hinge elementsl 45, and. 46, respectively. It will be understood, however, that vthe wingsA may be hingedfto spring actuated elements of other suitable designs.

In the design illustrated in Fig. 14 spring arms 78 and 7,9 jare crimped in ears 80 and 81 `on the ends of an armu 82 o f spring' element 83 and' a bar 84, similar to the bar 65,.a'nd upon which the body ofthe animal may be 'mountedextends from the end of a lower arm 86 to which the bar 84frnay be secured by crimping, asl indicated at"the point 87or by other means. With the bodyv of ,th bird mounted on the bar 84 the arms 78 ,'and.79are, hinged `to the wings,l similar to the arms 66 and 67 of the design shown in Figs. 9 to 13.
YWitl'tithe wings hinged to the body, in this manner and with Ithe Wings actuated by spring arms as illustrated in the' diierent designs the bird is manually activated by compressing and 4releasing the spring elements.
It will be understood thatotlier modifications, within the scope of the appendedclaims, may be made in the from the vspirit "of the'invention.
What is claimed is:
l. An activatedtoyL comprising a bodyA having ahead on one end and a tail extended from the opposite end, Wings hinged to the body, a U-shaped spring having arms, means hinging the wings of the body to the arms of the spring, said body having a transversely disposed opening extended therethrough and a spring extended through the opening in the body I'connecting said wings.
