UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. BOKOP, OF DEFIANOE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND D. B, TURNBULL, OF SAME PLACE.
TlRE-SETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,168, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed July 27,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. BOKOP, of Deliance,in the county of Defiance and State ofOhio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Settingand Cooling Tires;
and I do hereby declare that the following is t a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which f rm :1 part oi'this specification.
to The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction and operation of devices to be employed in setting and cooling wagon-tires; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and operation of the parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a plan view with aportion of the tire-platform broken away to showthe working parts of the device. Fig. 2is a cross-section on the line XXin Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line of the shaftin Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of thisspecification, A represents acylindrically-shaped tub of sufficient diameter and depth for the purpose. In the bottom of this tub are placed the bed-plates B, provided with standards 0, in which is journaled the shaft D, which is operated by a hand-lever, E. A
two-armed crank, F, is secured near each end a of this shaft, and the outer ends of the crank are pivot-allyconnected to the levers G, and
' the outer ends or the levers G are pivot-ally connected to thetoggle-jointed posts H. The
lower ends of these posts are pivotally secured 5 to the bed-plates B, while the upper, ends of these posts are p ivotally secured to the platform I, the whole of these parts being so arranged that a movement of a hand-lever, E,
in one direction, through the medium of the 0 two-armed crank anditsconnecting-levers, elevates or lowers theplatform Within the tub.
J are coiled springs, situated in the circular recess a in the bottotnof the tub, and their upper ends impinge against the lower side of the '45 platform to assist in elevating the same.
The platform I is made of two rings, K and L. These rings are connected together by a series of radiating flat bars, M, the innerends of which are attached to the ring K,while the outer ends project beyond the'ring L. and are attached to the same at the point of intersection, and are provided with return-bends, which are in turn attached to the ritn L and project inside thesameradiallypartway to the smaller ring, as shown in Fig. 1.
t N are link-guides,the lower ends embracing the shaft D, while the upper ends are secured to the lower side of the platform, and are designed to steady the raising and lowering of such platform. In practice the wheel to be supplied with'a tire is laid upon the platform, which is elevated, by the means described, above the level of the water in the tub, the hub of the wheel entering the center of the ring L. The tire having been heated, is now placed around the rim of the wheel in the usual manner, when the platform, with the Wheel thereon,is lowered into the water in the tub, whereitis shrunk to place in the act of cooling. 7o
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is' 1. The combination, with a Water-tank and wheel-supporting platform. of the togglejointed posts H and guides N,thecentrally-locatetl two-armed lever Rand the connecting-rods G, adapted to simultaneously operate, and thereby raise and lowerthetoggle-jointed posts and the wheel-platform, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the herein-described 8o raising and lowering devices and a suitable water tank or tub, the wheel-platform formed of the rings K L, and the radiating flat bars M, formed with return-bends and secured to the said inner and outer rings, substantially I as set forth,
In witness that I claim the above as my iuvention 1 have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of J uly, 1862.
HENRY DQBQKOP.
