mill]; lllllll'l'r I I 1A Nrrn TATES MICHAEL SOHMALY, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
STU M P-EXTRACTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,884, dated April 27, 1880.
Application filed November 11, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL SOHMALY, of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Stump-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices commonly called stumppullers and the invention consists, first, in the construction and application of certain appliances whereby water can be employed as the operating power; and second, in construction, arrangement, and combinations of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 3
is a plan view. Fig. 4. is a detail.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable frame mounted upon the wheels B. These wheels are properly journaled to the plates B, one end of which is pivoted to the base-girt A of the frame, as at a. The opposite ends of these plates pass behind the ends of the keeper-plates I), while the buttons or latches c, pivoted to the top of the basegirts of the frame, pre ent the free ends of the plates B from rising or being forced up by the weight of the machine.
Mounted upon the table A and secured thereto, is a water reservoir or tank, 0, which is connected by suitable pipe to the forcepump D, which is operated by means of the levers E F and connecting-rod G, as shown. By means of this pump Water is forced into the ram-cylinder H, through a proper connection, under the solid ram I. To the upper end of this ram'is pivoted, between suitable arms, a grooved pulley, J.
The ram-cylinder is provided with an overflow-pipe, d, and a discharge-pipe, f, the latter being provided with a suitable stop-cock, g, both of which pipes discharge into the reservoir.
Over the pulley J is passed a chain, K, which is provided with hooks upon both ends, said chain passing down through slots or openings in the bed on both sides of the ram. Another chain, L, is suspended from the under side of the b6( I Rising from the bed at one end is a standard, M, in the upper end of which is pivoted a lever, N, to which, in turn, is pivoted a slotted plate, which slides in suitable ways on the under side of the bed.
In practice the device is placed over the stump or whatever is to be raised, and the buttons 0 are turned so that the machine may settle firmly upon the ground. The ends of the chain K are then made fast to the object, the pump is put in motion, the tank having first been filled with water, and the stop-cock closed. Water is thus forced into the ramcylinder, which causes the ram to rise and pull upon the chain. As this chain passes freely around or over the pulley the strain is brought upon the least adhesive side of the stump. YVhen the rain has been extended to its limit the supplemental chain L is made fast to the object, thus retaining it in its elevated position until the ram can be lowered and the slack of the chain is taken. up, the operation being repeated until the object is raised to the desired height, when the chain can be locked to place by pushing in the slotted plate, which engages with one of the links of the chain.
The operation of lifting may be accelerated by locking the chain with the lockingslide, making the opposite end fast to the object. Then, as the ram is raised, the object will be raised twice the travel of the ram.
What I claim as my invention is 1. I11 a stump-puller, the combination of a suitable frame with a force-pump, D, and ram H I, the latter being provided with a pulley, J, and chain K, substantially as specified.
2. In a stump-puller, the combination of a suitable frame with a tank, 0, pump D, and ram H I, substantially as set forth.
3. The base-girts A, in combination with the plates B, pivoted thereto and carrying the wheels B, keeper-plates b, and latches c, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. A stump-pullin g device consisting of the frame A, provided with adjustable wheels B, reservoir 0, force-pump D, ram H I, pulley J, chains K L, standard M, levers N, and locking-slide 0, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
