IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,261, dated March 3, 1374; applicationfiled January 29, 1874'.

' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, B. D. TABoR, of Vilson, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,-and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construct-ion and arrangement of a two-horse cultivator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my inventionappertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my cultivator. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with one wheel removed, and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of one end of the frame thereof.

A represents ahorizontal cast-iron skeleton frame, of any suitable form and dimensions, in the center of which, on top, is secured the tongue B. 011 the under side of the frame A are attached suitable standards 0, with shovelplows C. At each end, on the under side of the frame, are attached suitable boxes to a, to form bearings for a short axle, D, upon the outer end of which is an arm, G, extending at right angles with it. At the outer end of the arm G is an outwardnojecting spindle, b, for the reception of the wheel E. At each end of the arm Gr is a projecting journal, d, and a lug or stop, 0. H represents alever, the lower end of which is forked, and each prong forms at its end a kind of half-box, f, to fit around one side of the journal (I, and between it and the lug c. The two prongs of the lever H are not of equal size, but the lever is so arranged that the prong leading to the outer or spindle end of the arm G will be longer than the other, 7

and hence exert more leverage in its operation. The lever is pressed inward by means of a spring, h, attached to the arm G, so that a lug, 1', on the inner side of the lever will be forced into a segmental rack-bar, I, cast upon or attached to the end of the frame.

By this arrangement the wheels E E can be easily raised or lowered, so as to throw the plows as deep as desired in the ground, or raise them up entirely out of the same, The levers H H rocking upon their journals d d renders'the manipulation easy and reliable.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a cultivator, the arm G, with its short axle D, spindle b, journals cl, and stopse, in combination with pronged lever H, forming half-boxes f f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a cultivator, of the pron ged lever H, having halfboxes ff, and lug i, with stops 6, rack-bar I, and spring a, substantially as and for the purpose described.
