1 Claim. (Cl. 224--) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in laundry and clothespin carriers adapted for supporting on the body of a person and equipped with means for holding laundry to be carried from a laundry room to a clothesline on which the laundry is to be hung.

An important object of invention is to provide a laundry carrier of this character including a foldable arm on which a number of laundered garments may be supported while the latter are being placed individually on a clothesline and also to provide a pocket on the carrier for holding clothespins.

Another object of the invention is to provide a strap by means of which the carrier may be suspended from the neck and shoulders of a person, thus leaving the hands free, and with the laundry supporting arm extending horizontally in front of the person to eliminate the usual practice of stooping to pick up the laundry from a clothes basket.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 2 is a side elevational view; and

Figure 3 is a side elevational view, showing the carrier in folded position.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of our invention the numeral 5 designates a rigid panel which may be constructed of lightweight wood, metal, plastic or other suitable material and worn or supported in the manner of an apron by means of a strap 6 attached to the upper edges of the panel and adapted for placing behind the neck of the wearer to support the panel in front of the wearer. The back of the strap 6 is provided with a pad 7 of suitable material to relieve the wearer of discomfort formed by pressure of the strap against the back of the neck.

A pair of channel brackets 8 are suitably secured to the front of the panel 5 adjacent the center thereof and in which the arms 9 of a substantially U-shaped garment support 10 are swingably supported by means of trunnions 11 at the inner ends of the arms engaged in vertical slots 12 extending upwardly at the lower edges of the brackets to lock the arms in the brackets and with the arms resting on transverse pins 13 carried by the brackets forwardly of the slots 12.

The other ends of the arms 9 are curved outwardly in diverging relation with respect to each other as shown at 14 and are connected to each other by means of a front cross bar 15 to increase the width of the laundry support at its front end.

A canvas or other suitable foldable receptacle 16 is attached to the lower front portion of the panel or apron 5 and is provided with vertical reinforcing rods 17 at the side edges of the receptacle and a U-shaped stiffening member 18 for the upper edge thereof and which is foldable with the receptacle inwardly against the panel when not in use. Clothespins or other laundry accessories may be carried in the receptacle, which is conveniently positioned under the arms 9 to enable the user to have available at all times an adequate supply of clothespins. The receptacle is kept open by the members 18 and the weight of the clothespins contained therein.

The device is supported on the body of a person by placing strap 6 behind the neck and the panel 5 is then suspended in front of the person in the manner of an apron and protects the person from contact with wet laundry carried on the arms 9. The arms are supported in a forward position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 by engaging the trunnions 11 in the slots 12 and resting the arms on the pins 13. The arms may be folded in a vertical position by lifting the outer end thereof whereupon the trunnions will drop downwardly in the slots 12 and the inner ends of the arms will then enter the receptacle 16 to support the arms in a folded position.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

An article carrier comprising a panel, attaching means connected to the panel for supporting the panel on the body of a person, a receptaclev at the lower front portion of the panel, a bracket attached to the panel above the receptacle and including a vertical flange having a vertical slot in its lower edge, a transverse pin on the bracket in front of the slot, and an arm having a trunnion at its inner end slidably received in the slot while the arm rests on said pin to support the arm in a forwardly extended position in front of the panel, and said arm being slidable downwardly behind the pin to enter the receptacle and said pin and said receptacle co-acting for supporting the arm in a folded vertical position in front of the panel.
