C. H. MILLER. ATTACHMENT TOR PIPE TONGS 0R WRENGHES.
f No. 273,874. Patented Mar. 13,1883.
llllllllllllll fha/TZ@ J ma/ CHARLES H. MILLER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR PIPE TONGS OR WRENCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,874, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed October 16, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that l, CHARLES H. MILLER, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county ot' Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Attachment for Pipe Tongs orWrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention consists in providing an attachment for pipe-tongs, whereby they can be used for cutting screw-threads on pipes, rods, etc.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of pipe-tongs provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a. vertical longitudinal section through the tongs. Figs. 3 is a perspective view ot' the sleeve C.
In Fig. 1 the device is shown in position upon a pipe, P, as when cutting a thread. In Fig. 2 the pipe P is omitted and a ferrule, G, is seen in the sleeve.
The pipe-tongs shown are similar to one recently patented by me; but my attachment is not limited in its use to this particular style ot' tongs, but can be applied, or so constructed as to be applied, to any tongs in which the die or bit D is moved within a recess in the head A of the tongs or wrench, substantially as or similarly to the wrench shown in the drawings.
To operate the device the die or bit of the tongs must be removed and one adapted to the purpose of cutting screw-threads be substituted therefor; or the tongs bit may be made reversible, and have at one end the construction necessary, and then it can be reversed when used for screw-cutting.
The attachment proper consists of a sleeve, C, which is provided with flanges c c, and between the anges is provided with faces a ct, and is thus adapted to tit within the hook A2 -of the tongs. The sleeve is also provided with an opening, c', between the tlanges, in proper position for the bit D to pass through. The form ofthe sleeve and the position of the hole (No model.)
c between the flanges c c will vary in accortiance to the style of tongs or wrench with which the sleeve is to be used. Then the die or bit of the tongs is moved by a handle or lever, B, as in the drawings, a clamp, F, is provided for holding the lever B in place While the device is used as a screw-cutter; but when the die is moved by a screw the clamp is not required.
To adapt a sleeve to various sizes ot' pipes, ferrules G can be used in the sleeve below the die and secured there by a set-screw, g.
The attachment, asa whole, would consist ot' the sleeve C, a set of ferrules, G, a set oi' dies, D, and, with tongs like the one shown, the clamps F. Vith such a rig a plumber or fitter can quickly convert his pipe-wrench into a screw-cutter. The sleeve U may also have a second hole, c2, in it for the purpose of enabling the operator to see when the cutting is properly done and for applying` oil to the cut ter when wanted. This opening is not really essential.
What I claim as new isl. The sleeve C, having` exterior projections andan opening for the cutter, for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with a pipe tongs or wrench having a hook, A2, and a die or bit moving in a recess in the head A', of a sleeve, C, with die-opening c', and adapted, substantially as shown, to be held by said hook, with said opening opposite said recess, for the purposes mentioned.
The combination, with a pipe tongs or wrench having a hook, A2, and a die or bit moving in a recess in the head A by means of a lever, B, of a sleeve, C, with opening c, and adapted, substantially as shown, to be held by said hook, with the opening c opposite said recess. and a clamp, F, for clamping the said lever B against the handle A, all substantially as shown. e
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. MILLER.
Witnesses J No. K. HALLocK, RoB'r. H. PoR'rnR.
