WILLIAM S. MC-LEWEE, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JACOB J. NICHOLS, OF
BROOKLYN, N. Y.
CIGAR=LIGHTER.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,868, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed November 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. MGLEWEE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to cigar-lighters which comprise a reservoir for alcohol, receptacles for torches, and a reservoir or fount for a lamp, from which the torches may be lighted.
Theimprovement consists in a cigar-lighter havinga single piece of glass, porcelain, or other ceramic ware comprising a reservoir for alcohol, and provided with a portion extending centrally upward from it for supporting a lamp-reservoir, and also provided with pro jections on opposite sides, having open tops, through which torches may be inserted into the alcohol-reservoir, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation ot'a cigar-lighter embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofa piece of glass, porcelain, or other ceramic ware, comprising a reservoir for alcohol, receptacles for torches, and a holder for a lamp-fount.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a base-piece, which may be made of sheet metal, spun into shape and secured, if desirable, to a heavy metallic footpiece arranged within it.
B designates a single piece of glass, porcelain, or other ceramic ware, comprising a peg, a, which fits in the base-piece A, and is secured there by plaster-of-paris or cement, a reservoir for alcohol, I), receptacles or holders 0 for torches D, and a holder, cl, for a lampfount, E. The alcohol-reservoir b is of globular form, and the torch-holders consist of semicylindric extensions or projections on opposite sides thereof. The holder for the lamp-fount extends centrally upward from the reservoir, and is shown as of cylindric form, and the lamp-fount as of corresponding shape. The lamp-fount is shown as made ofisheet metal, and has a flange, 0, extending over the top of. the holder d and suspending it. It is designed for containing kerosene and to be furnished with a kerosene-burner. The torch-holders have lips at the upper ends, and to these are fitted ornamental sheet-metal tips. If desirable, sheet-metal tubes may be extended down into the torch-receptacles nearly to the bottom to receive the torches. The torches consist of twisted wire, as usual, and have ornamental handles, which rest on the tips of the holders 0.
The piece B may be decorated in any suitable manner.
It is obvious that by my improvement I produce a very tasteful and cheap cigar-lighter.
I am aware that there has been patented a cigar-lighter comprising a lower fount for alcohol and an upper Iamp-lount for oil, detachably fitted in the alcohol-fount, and having tubes extending through it to admit of the insertion of torches into the alcohol.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cigar-lighter having a single piece of glass, porcelain, or other ceramic ware comprising a reservoir for alcohol, and provid d with a portion extending centrally upward from it for supporting a lamp-reservoir, and also provided with projections on oppositesides having open tops, through which torches may beinserted into the alcohol reservoir, substantially as specified.
