S. H. SMITH.
WOODEN PLATE.
Patented Mar. 13,1883.
'W I TJV'ESSES ZJV VENTOR N. PETERS Pimwumc m mn Washington, D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH H. SMITH, OF DELTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SMITH MAN UFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WOODEN PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 273,773, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed November 22, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH H. SMITH, a oilizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county ofFulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Wooden Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to plates or dishes for butter, berries, and for other purposes; and it consists of a concavo-convex shell segmental in cross-section, and with a level or horizontal upper edge, the same being out or scooped in a single piece from the face ofa block of wood, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a plan view: of my improved plate. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line mm, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3 y.
The same letters refer all the figures.
My improved plates are made of wood in a single piece by cutting them from the face of a block, across the grain of the latter. This is done by means of a machine which I have made the subject of a separate application for 0 Letters Patent, and which comprises a revolving curved knife for scooping or cutting the shells from the face of the block, and a flat facing-knife for facing off the block after each stroke of the cutting-knife. By this facing-ofl' 5 process, which takes placeintermittingly with the operation of the cutting-knife, the upper to the same parts in edge of each shell is leveled off smoothly, thus preventing splitting or sliveriug, and causing all the dishes or shells out by the same machine to be of exactly the same size and shape, 40 so that they may be nested together in the smallest possible space for transportation.
In the drawings, A represents my improved plate or dish. This, as will be seen in Fig. 3, is true segmental in cross-section, and its upper 5 edges are horizontal, as shown at B.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- l. A plate or dish out or scooped from a block of wood in concavo-convex form, as an 0 article of manufacture.
2. A plate or dish out or scooped from the face of a block of wood in concavo-con vex form and segmental in cross-section, as an article of manufacture. 5 5
3. A plate or dish consisting of a shell out or scooped from the face of a block of Wood in concavo convex form and with horizontal upper edges, as an article of manufacture.
4. A plate or dish consisting of a shell cut or scooped from the face of a block of wood in concavo-convex form, segmental in cross-section, and with horizontal upper edges, as an article of manufacture. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 6 my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SETH HENRY SMITH.
