Description

(No Model.)
F. HANSON.
NAIL FOR CARRIAGE CURTAIN FASTENINGS. No. 273,729. Patented Mar. 13,1883.
'lijjnllllllllllllluflhi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREEMAN HANSON, OF HOLLIS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE L. WARREN 'AND A CHARLES F. WARREN, BOTH OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
NAIL FOR CARRIAGE-CURTAIN FASTENINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,729, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed May 29, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEMAN HANSON, of Hollis, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable other skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is aside sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a view of the body-top with the head removed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the top when removed from the body. Fig. 5 is a view of the body with the head removed.
My invention relates to nails to be used on carriages or house-walls for holding carriagecurtains. picture-cord, &c.
It consists of the combination of a removable head, a, with shank b, and spring 0, with the body d, having the socket e, lips f, and shoulders g, and the screw or nail formed shank h.
My invention is designed to be applied to nails where it is desirable to have a removable head, easily removable and capable of being securely attached to the body.
The button-holes of carriage-curtains are continually being torn out by the pulling-of the curtain olf over the head of the button. Annoyance'and expense are occasioned by this. When torn to a certain extent the expense of new curtains has to beincurred. This is produced by the fact that the head has to be large enough to hold the curtain securely, and thus the button-hole goes over the head with difficulty and fits tightly, and so the head is apt to tear out the hole.
With myinventiou the button-holeis passed over the body d of the nail, and then the head is pressed into place, and when the curtain is to be taken 0d the head a is quickly removed and the curtain taken 01f the carriage without liability of tearing.
up against the lipsf, and so hold the head in place. The shoulders 9 meet the edges ofthe spring 0 and prevent the head a from being turned any farther. Thus the head has to he turned in one particular direction in order to be turned out. The body d is furnished with the nail or screw h, and can be attached by either means, as desired. When driven into place, then the head a is taken ofl' while driving.
If a hole is madein the place into which the device is to be placed and the screw is used, as seen in the drawings, then the head can be kept on and the device sent to its place by turning with the thumb and finger.
I do not claim a nail with a removable head, which head is capable of being held in place when desired.
My invention covers the combination of devices herein LIGSGIlbQtLOPBIHtlUg as set forth.
WhatIclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a nail having a removable head, the combination of the head a, shank b,the two-armed flaring spring 0, the lips f of the socket, the shoulders g, to check the rotation of the head when turned, the body d, having the socket e, and a nail or screw, h, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iaifix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
FREEMAN HANSON.
