DOOR-KNOB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,685, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed December 8, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROLLIN D. HUNTLEY, of Havana, in the county ofSchuyler and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle- Knobs for Doors, Windows, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention,whieh will enableoihers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a partof this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handleknob for a door embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view or the same; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, showinga somewhat modified construction.

Like letters of reference indicate correspouding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to handle-knobs for doors, windows, closets, and the like; and it consists in the improved construction of the knob, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, to adapt it to retain a disk of luminous paint or composition, and a glass plate covering and protecting the same from contact with the hands in using the knob.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A denotes the body of the knob, which may be of wood, metal, or any other desired material. The face or front part of the knob is recessed, as shown at B, forming a flat surface of circular shape having beveled edges. This flat surface, at the bottom of the recess, is coated with a layer of luminous paint or composition, 1), after which a piece of glass, U, shaped to fit the recess, is pressed down on the paint, and. its beveled edge fastened to the beveled edge of the recess by cement E.

The outside or face of the glass disk 0 is ground to conform to the shape of the finished knob, convex or flat, as the case may be, and by beveling its rim and the rim of the recess into which it is inserted the strip of cement E may be made of sufficient Width to hold the glass disk firmly in its place, so that it shall not come off in handling the knob.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings the glass disk 0 is held in place upon the knob by a ring or annular cap, E, 0

body, A, having a circular recess, B, with bev- 6o eled edge, a layer, D, of luminous paint or composition, a glass disk, 0, having a beveled rim, and shaped to conform to the shape of the finished knob, and a strip of cement, E,

interposed between the beveled edge of the recess and beveled rim of the glass disk, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
