Description

Patented eb. 9, V1.932`
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE METAL DOOR Application led July 28, 1928. Serial No. 298,044.
My invention relates to metal doors, and
v an object thereof is to provide a metallic door construction wherein the sheet metal forming the door stile may be directly secured to the door panels.
Further, the invention provides a metallic door construction wherein the moulding of the stile may be directly spot-welded to the parallel flanges of the metal panels, `or` applied ornaments attached to the mouldings through the same weld that connects the mouldings and the parallel flanges.
Vith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a metallic door constructed in accordance with my invention, v
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figurel,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, illustrating the application of applied ornamentation to one of the mouldings,
Figure l is a horizontal sectional view illustrating the use of a glass panel, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view illustrating the use of special mouldings.
Referring to the invention in detail, a sheet metal stile 5 surrounding a core 6 is provided. As illustrated in Figure 2, the longitudinal project laterally from the inner face of the core 6 to constitute spaced, oppositely curved mouldings 7, which terminate in inwardly directed flanges 8.
A panel comprising a ller 9 and spaced parallel plates 10 is arranged with the plates received between the inner longitudinal edges of the flanges 8, and contacting with the 1atter. These plates terminate in contacting parallel flanges 11 which are received between the mouldings, and are spot-welded through the latter at predetermined intervals, as at 12. If desired, suitable metallic ornamentation 13 may be secured to one of the mouldings 6 edges of the sheet metal forming the stile 5 the inwardly directed flanges 8 of themoulding 7 are omitted, and in lieu thereof mouldings 17 extend from opposite faces of the panel to the inner face of the stile, and are attached thereto by nails or other suitable fastenings 18 driventhrough the mouldings and engaging the core 6.
What is claimed is:
In a door, a sheet metal stile, having a wooden core, inwardly projecting iianges formed with said stile, a panel received between said flanges, means for securing said panel to said flanges, and a moulding strip l formed to fit the angle between the inner face of said stile and said panel and abutting the inner face of said stile and one face of said panel and secured to the Wooden core of said stile whereby to conceal said flanges and said securing means.
Signed at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, this 20th day of July, A. 11,1928.
GEORGE B. DETERMANN.
