UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE..
PHILIP SCHRAG, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EBERHARD FABER, OF PORT RICHMOND, N. Y.
PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,615, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed December 13. 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP Sanitaer, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pen'holder the mouth or tip of which is composed oftwojaws, one of which fits the outside and the other the inside ofthe shank of' the pen, and which retain their original shape when the pen is inserted.
The peculiar construction ot' my pen-holder is pointed out in the following specification and illustrated inthe accompanyingdrawings, in which- Fignre l represents a sectional front elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the plane Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe inner jaw detached. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section in the plane y y, Fig. 2, the pen being` in the holder.
Similar letters indicate correspoi'lding` parts.
ln the drawings, the letter A designates the stati' or handle of my pen -holden To the lower end of this stati' is secured the outer shell, B, which, together with the inner shell, C, composes the tip of my pen holder. The two shells consist ot' tubes oi' a size to tsnugly one within the other, and both are cut away to the extent of nearly halt' their circumference from the extremity a suitable distance backward to form an opening like that commonly provided in the inner and outer shells oimany pen-holder tips. The outer shell, B, is closed all round, and its inside diameter is equal to the outsidediameter ofthe Shanks ofthe pens to be inserted into the pen-bolder. The inner shell, O, is slit longitudinally from the lowest point, a, ot' its opening to its inner end, (see Fig. 3,) and it is secured to the outer shell by a rivet, b, near its inner end. The outer end of said inner shell projects beyond the outer shell, as shown in Fig. l. When the pen is inserted between the two shells, the slit in the inner shell is slightly compressed, as shown in Fig. 4, and the outer surface of said shell tits snugly into the cavity of the shank of the pen-holder, so as to retain the same [firmly in position between it and the outer In otl'ierpen-holders the tip oi' which is coniposed or' an inner and outer shell, the slit in the inner shell is made in that portion which forms one of the jaws for retaining the pen, and the jaw, being weakened by the slit, does not retain the pen with the desired firmness. In my pen-holder the retaining-jaw ot' the inner shell is left solid, and its appearance is materially improved.
I am aware that a pen-holder has heretofore been constructed of a eonvolute plate of metal, and also that a pen-holder has been composed of a convolute plate of metal secured within an outer shell. Such constructions, however, do not constitute my invention, and are not claimed by me.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A pen-holder combining in its structure an outer unslitted shell, B, and a longitudinally-slitted shell, C, both cutaway about halt' their circumference from their outer toward their inner extremities, and the slit in the inner shell extending from the inner edge of its cut-away circumference to the rear end ofthe shell, with a rivet, b, securing the inner with-- in the outer shell, so that the slitted part of the former shell is directly opposite its solid pen-retainingjaw, substantially as' described.
2. A pen-holder combining in its structure an outer unslitted shell, B, an inner shell, O, and a rivet, b, permanently securing the two together, saidinner shell having a solid penretainingjaw to tit the inside ot' a pen and slitted longitudinallyat a point opposite its retaining-jaw to form two opposite edges, which approach each other on the insertion ot' a pen between the outer surface ofthe said solid retaining-jaw and the inner surface ofthe outer shell, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses.
