SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,568, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed September 30, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

'Be'it known that I, F. H. MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Darlington, in the county of Montgomery and SI ate specification, and to the letters and figures ofv reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention in a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view of it applied to the handle of a pitchfork. Fig. 3 is a detail view.

This invention has relation to band-cutting attachments for-pitchforks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the clip or fastening designed to be applied to the handle of the fork. This clip is formed with a head, b, having a journal-seat, 0, extending through it, and is usually secured to the handle of the fork by means of a sliding plate or block, 0, which'is perforated to receive the threaded eudsofthe branches (Land by thenuts e, which are applied to said threaded ends. y

' The shears or cutter F consists of a straight pointed blade, g, and a concave curved blade, h. The straight blade 9 is located next the tork, and is provided at ,its heel with a journal, k, which extends back in the direction of its length and engages theseat 0 inthehead I) of the clip. being designed to turn therein. The journal is prevented from escaping from its seat or bearing 0 by means of a nut, n, which is apphed to its threaded end. By means of the journal k and its bearing the bladeg is enabled to turn axially, or about the line of its cutting-edge, its pointl, however, remaining in the same position with relerence to the fork. The outer curved blade, h, is pivoted to the broad heel of the straight blade at p, and is provided with an arm, m, extendmg ont- Ward from it's heel end, said arm being con nected, by means of a rod, r, to a sleeve-handle or slide-handle, s, which is applied tothe handle of the pitchfork. The curved blade his formed with a concave arched inner cuttingedge, z, which will hold the band securely until it is divided. As the blade g is pivoted in parallel relation'to the fork-handle, and the slide-handle s of the attachment turns on said fork-handle, the shears can be readily turned about their long axis to facilitate their engagement with the band to be cut.

A fork having its tines and fenders slotted longitudinally has been combined with a double-edgedvibratingknifeoperated byarod-andsleeve connection; and pruning-shears have been operated in a similar manner. Neither of these constructions is'therefore claimed, broadly, herein.

Having described-this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. Aband-cuttingattachmentforpitchforks,

consisting of the clip a, provided with the seat c, the straight blade g, pivoted in said seat 0, the arched blade h, pivoted to-the heel of the blade 9, and provided with the arm at, the connecting-rod 'r, and sliding sleeves, substantially as specified.

2. A band-cutting attachment consisting of the clip a, provided with the seat 0, the straight bladeg, pivoted in said seat 0, thearched blade h, pivoted to the heel of the blade g. and provided with the arm m, the connecting-rod r, and sliding sleeve 8, in combination with a pitchfork, substantially as specified.
