UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN WILLIAM JONES, OF GENTROPOLIS, KANSAS.
CULTlVATOR-SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,550, dated March 6, 1883.
' Application filed November 22, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: u
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. JONES, of Gentropolis, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Oultivator-Shovels,of which the following is full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a detachable point section for cultivator plows to enable new points to be applied when required; and it also consists of an adjustable and detachable shovelconnection with the plow-stock, the said device being contrived, as hereinafter fully described, to provide simple and efficient means ofremoving the points and ofsetting the plows to any required pitch.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a cultivatorplow and part of a plow-stock contrived according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line w :v.
I make the cultivator-plow to consist of a point-section, a, and an upper plate, I), said sections being disconnected, but matching together at the joint 0. I attach the plate I) permanently to the shank d, by which the two sections are to be connected to the stock 6; but I bolt on the point-section a by countersunk bolts flproviding the shank d with a widened lower section, g, to form a broad bearing for the point and to receive the bolts each side of the part 01, thus enabling the worn-out points to be removed and new ones to be put on readily to economize in the cost of renewals by saving the upper parts of the shovels, which do not wear away as fast as the points.
For detachably connecting the plows to the plow-stock e,'and at the same time enabling me to set them as desired with respect to the pitch or inclination to the stocks, I make a groove in the rear side of the shank d. corresponding with an oval cross-sectional form of the front of the stock, and clamp the two parts together by a strap-yoke, h, made fast by a gib, t, and keyj, inserted in the slotted end of the yoke, thus making a simple but very substantial fastening, which is convenient to connect and disconnect, and allowing the plowshovel to be shifted as desired. The best form for the'groove in the back of the shank d and the front of the stock 6, whereon itbears, is
recess'ed shank d, provided with a widened lower section, g, an upper forwardly-projectin g portion, and the upper plate-section, b, the point-section a, bolted to the wings or sections 9 of the shank, the apertured yoke or strap h, embracing the shank d between its widened section g and forwardly-projecting portion, and the fastening composed of the recessed key j and gib i, essentially as shown and described.
JOHN WILLIAM JONES.
