Description

Feb. 14, 1956 F. J. LINDSLEY CHANCE SELECTION RHYME ILLUSTRATION DEVICE Filed June 11, 1952 INVENTOR.
FRANK J. LINDSLEY d ATTQRNEY United States Patent CHANCE SELECTION RHYME ILLUSTRATION DEVICE This invention relates to toys and particularly toys which present a picture having a part carried by an element movable predeterminedly relative to the remainder of such picture.
An object of the invention is to provide a mounting plate on which is illustrated a nursery rhyme descriptive of some certain action, and to movably mount on such plate a card illustrating a figure or the like mentioned by the rhyme, the action thus afforded being approximately that described by the rhyme.
Another object is to construct a toy of the above de scribed character of quite inexpensive materials and with a minimum number of parts, so that such toy may be produced and sold at low cost.
Another object is to equip the card with an actuator for applying the desired motion.
Another object is to form a mounting plate of front and rear sheets marginally interconnected and jointly forming a pocket inwardly of their interconnection, and to slit the front sheet to receive a card which may be sufliciently withdrawn from said pocket to display a part mentioned or implied in a nursery rhyme appearing on the plate.
These and various other objects are attained by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 77 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 perspectively shows one of several cards employed in the arrangement shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
Referring now in greater detail to the drawings, there is employed a mounting plate, preferably of circular form and comprising front and rear sheets 24 and 25 marginally interconnected and forming a pocket 26 inwardly of their margins. A child seated in a corner and occupied with a pastry is illustrated centrally of the mounting plate on its front face. Outwardly of such illustration the front sheet is formed with a circular series of equidistant slits 27 preferably radial. Slidably inserted in each slit is a card 28 elongated transversely to such slit, and on the several cards are illustrated diverse fruits, as a plum, peach, pear, etc. Thus said cards provide at least approximate illustration of the expression pulled out a plum in the well-known Jack Horner rhyme. These cards normally lie primarily within the pocket 26, so that their illustrations are concealed, and such cards may be sulficiently withdrawn to expose the illustrations. For actuating each card, a knob 29 is fixed upon a front end thereof, and a pair of lugs 30 project oppositely from the other end, preventing complete withdrawal.
Thus a child may diversely carry out the approximate idea suggested by a well-known rhyme, according as one or another of the cards 28 is pulled out to expose its illustration. With this form of the invention, moreover, a game may be played by oifering various different prizes or imposing penalties each corresponding to one of the cards 28, each of a group of children thus being allowed to make a selection which will determine a prize or penalty.
The described toy is suited to quite inexpensive production and has proven decidedly attractive to small children.
it is to be noted that formation of the mounting plate with an interior pocket avoids any such projections at the back of such plate as might scratch or mar a surface on which the toy is disposed.
What I claim is:
l. A toy comprising a mounting plate including front and rear sheets and means marginally interconnecting such sheets, whereby a pocket is formed between the sheets inwardly of their margins, the front sheet carrying an illustration of a nursery rhyme and being formed with a slit forwardly opening from said pocket, 21 card movable into and out of the pocket through the slit and having an illustration exposed through withdrawal of the card from the pocket, such illustration pertaining to said rhyme, said card substantially conforming in width to the length of the slit, a lug on the inner end portion of the card projecting lengthwise of the slit beyond an end of the slit to limit outward actuation of the card, and an actuator for the card forwardly projecting from its outer end portion, limiting inward actuation of the card. 7 2. A toy comprising a mounting plate including front and rear sheets jointly forming a pocket and means interconnecting such sheets, the front sheet carrying an illustration of a nursery rhyme and being formed with a substantially circular series of slits surrounding said illustration, a plurality of cards respectively slidable in the respective slits into and out of said pocket and diversely providing further illustration at least approximately pertaining to said nursery rhyme, actuators for the cards on their outer end portions, and means limiting outward actuation of the cards.
3. A toy comprising a mounting plate including front and rear sheets and means marginally interconnecting such sheets, whereby a pocket is formed between the sheets inwardly of their margins, the front sheet carrying an illustration of a nurseryrhyme and being formed with a slit forwardly opening from said pocket, a card movable into and out of the pocket through the slit and having an illustration exposed through withdrawal of the card from the pocket, such illustration pertaining to said rhyme, said card substantially conforming in width to the length of the slit, means on the inner end of the card limiting its outward actuation, and an actuator for the card forwardly projecting from its outer end portion and limiting inward actuation of the card.
4. A toy comprising a mounting plate including front and rear sheetsand means securing the front sheet at its margin to the rear sheet, whereby a pocket is formed between the sheets inwardly of said margin, the front sheet carrying an illustration of a nursery rhyme centrally disposed thereon, and being formed with a plurality of slits forwardly opening from the pocket, said slits being disposed in a circular series about such central illustration, a plurality of cards respectively slidable in the respective slits into and out of said pocket and diversely providing further illustrations pertaining at least approximately to said nursery rhyme, actuators for the cards limiting their insertion in the pocket, and means on the cards limiting their withdrawal from the pocket.
