Description

Nov. 10,1931. L. P. WARD 1,831,757
AMUSEMENT DEVICE Filed Feb. 16, 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet l Fi i I Inventor I Louise RWard A ftorney Nov. 10, 1931. 1.. P. WARD AMUSEMENT DEVICE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 w am - Filed Feb. 16, 1931 US EU Inventor Louise}? Ward G A tiormy Patented Nov. 10, 1931 LOUISE r. WARD, or sir. PAUL, MINNESOTA AMUSEMENT DEVICE Application filed February 16, 1931. Serial No. 516,240.
This invention appertains tonew and useful improvements in amusement devices, and more particularly to a novel picture exhibiting device which is interesting and educational for children.
An important object of the invention Is to provide an illuminated picture exhibiting device in the form of a miniature theater in Which miniature characters can be moved about in a realistic manner.
These and other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specication.
In the drawings Figure 7 represents a perspective'view of the lamp box.
Fig. 2 represents a front elevational view of the lamp box.
Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
.Fig. 4 represents a side elevational view of one of the character units.
Referringto the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the lamp box consists of the top section 5, bottom section 6, back section 7, and end section 8. The front of the box is closed by the screen which is built up of the rectangular-shaped frame 9 and the sheet 10 which can be of any desired material.
Suitable lacings 11, or in fact any other means of fastening is to be employed in se curing the various sections together to form the box-like structure I have shown in Fig. 1. The top section 5 is provided with an opening 12 through which an. electric lamp or some other illuminating means can be inserted. The sheet 10 is to be of some suitable translucent'material and is preferably provided with window openings 13.. I
On this sheet 10 can be any desiredpicturc disclosing scenery, interior decoration, or any other artistic or fanciful illustration. In the present instance, the interior of a twostory house is represented, and to the end that the well known childrens story, The Three Bears can be depicted. V
However, it is to be understood. that the 5 illustration on the sheet is not to be limited the invention in specific terms, it is to be unto the factors of this particular story, but may be varied to various extents, and in fact, an entire series of screens may be employed for a single lamp box construction. It will be noted however, that the top section 5 has its forward edge spaced from the screen frame 9 so as to provide a slot 14, and furthermore, one end section 8 is also'spaced by being reduced so as to provide a slot 15 between itself and the corresponding portion of the frame 9. This will permit the insertion of the stick 16 with its character 17 into the lamp, box, so that the character form 17 can be manipulated behind the sheet 10.
Several of these character forms can be manipulated simultaneously by a skillful arrangement of the sticks 16 in the hand along with the skillful manipulation of the fingers. While the foregoing specification sets forth derstood that numerous changes in the shape, size, and materials may be resorted to without departing from thespirit andscope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. An amusement device comprising a lamp box. said box being open at one side, a screen disposed over the open side of the box, said screen being of translucent material and provided with an illustration thereon, said box being provided with a slot therein, illuminating means in the box, a stick, and a, character form on one end of the stick, said stick being insertible through the slot so that the character form will be positioned between the screen and the illuminating means.
2. An amusement device comprising a lamp box, said box being open at one side, a screen disposed over the open side of the box, said screen being of translucentmaterial and. provided with an illustration thereon, said box being provided with a slot therein, illu' minating means in the box, a stick, a charac- 95 ter form on one end of the stick, said stick being insertible through the slot so that the character form will be positioned between the screen and the illuminatingmeans, said box being of sectional construction, and lacings for securing the said sections in box formation.
3. An amusement device comprising a lamp box, said box being open at one side, a screen disposed over the open side of the box, said screen being of translucent material and provided with an illustration thereon, said box being provided with a slot therein, illuminating means in the box, a stick, a character form on one end of the stick, said stick being insertible through the slot so that the character form will be positioned between the screen and the illuminating means, said screen being provided with openings therein simulating windows through which light from the interior of the box can pass.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
