1 Claim. (Cl. 16484.5)
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a tape dispensing device and more particuarly a device for dispensing tape having an adhesive on one face thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a dispensing device for tape wherein the tape drawn from the roll ready for severing is laid over a supporting member and is clamped thereagainst by a cutting blade to facilitate the severing of the tape by a pull thereon across the blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tape dispensing device of the above type wherein the supporting member for the tape and the cutting blade are mounted on a frame frictionally gripping the peripheral portion of a tape roll and wherein said frame is moved about the peripheryof the roll by a pull on the tape for stripping the tape from the roll.
Still another object is to provide a tape dispensing device of the above type wherein a means is provided for preventing the tape; from sticking to the support for the cutting blade after the tape is severed and before another tape dispensing operation.
In the drawings which show the tape dispensing device as applied tothe dispensing of tape from a tape roll:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of the tape dispensing device applied to a tape roll and showing the manner of holding the roll and stripping of the tape from the roll;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the cutting blade pressing the tape against the support therefor and illustrating in broken lines the manner of holding the tape while it is pulled across the blade for severing the same.
Figure 3 is a view showing a longitudinal sectional view through the tape dispensing device with the cutting blade and the cut end portion of the tape in raised position preparatory to gripping the tape end for another dispensing operation;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4, 4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5, 5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing the tape dispensing device removed from the tape roll and the cutting blade raised on the support against which the tape is clamped for severing.
The improved tape dispensing device as illustrated in the drawings is applied to the dispensing of tape from a tape roll which includes a rigid ring shaped supporting base member 1. The tape 2 is provided with an adhesive on the inner face thereof and is wound spirally upon said supporting base. This is a well known form of tape roll and need not be further described. The tape dispensing device includes a base plate 3 which extends transversely across the periphery of the tape roll. At each side of this base plate 3 are depending side members 4, 4. Each side member is curved outwardly as indicated at 5. The base plate 3 is the same width as the tape with a slight clearance at each side and the depending members 4 frictionally grip the side walls of the tape roll. These side members preferably extend inwardly a short distance beyond the supporting base member 1.
When the tape dispensing device is placed on the tape roll the tape end is carried around the rod 6 and is drawn over the supporting base plate 3. A pull on the tape as illustrated in Figure 1 will strip the tape from the roll and it will also cause the dispensing device to move along the peripheral portion of the roll to the same extent as the tape is stripped from the roll for dispensing. When the proper amount of tape has been drawn oif then the tape end 14 is laid on the supporting plate 7 as shown in Figure 2. The cutting blade is then lowered into position so as to engage the tape and pressure is applied to the blade so as to tightly clamp the tape against the supporting plate 7 therefor. The strip is then pulled across the blade in the usual manner for severing the same. One of the principal features of the present invention is this supporting plate against which the tape to be severed is clamped by the cutting blade. With this supporting plate a tape of plastic, linen, or any other well-known material, may be very readily severed.
The blade supporting plate 8 is provided with the finger 12 which lies in the space directly beneath the plate and in rear of the blade so that the tape is prevented from becoming detached from the blade and sticking to the underside of the supporting plate therefor. This retains the severed tape in the position shown in Figure 3 when the blade supporting plate is raised. The tape end is readily accessible, therefore, for finger engagement so as to pull off a desired length of tape for use.
It is obvious that the essential features of the tape dispensing device may be used with various types of tape roll supporting structures and it is also obvious that minor changes in the details of construction can be made without departing from the construction as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A tape dispensing device comprising a frame having members frictionally gripping the opposite side portions of a tape roll and movable about the periphery of the roll by a pull on the tape for stripping the tape from the roll, a rod carried by said frame and extending across the roll over which the tape is inverted and drawn, said frame having a supporting member extending along the tape roll over which the inverted stripped end portion of the tape is laid, a plate pivoted to said frame and a cutting blade at the free end of said plate extending at an angle thereto and having a serrated edge, said plate terminating short of the supporting member whereby the tape may be clamped against the outer face of said supporting' member and the tape severed by a pull on the tape lengthwise of the blade.
