A flat bar of metal 26 is carried forwardly from the leg l4 to a distance ahead of the forward end of the body l0, and is bent thence substantially at a right angle thereto to form a front cross bar section 21, substantially of a length equal to the width of the body In, and is then bent rearwardly by a portion 28 which terminates by a diagonally .cut end portion 29. 4 against, and further to have an inwardly extending central thimble 40 which may enter the hollow core 2| of the roll 20 as indicated in Fig. 8. In other words the circumferential portions of the thimbles 38 and 40 form bearing surfaces around which the roll of tape 20 may turn.
To the thimble 38, centrally thereof, is fixed a post 41 into which screw-threadedly engages a screw member 42 in turn preferably fixed centrally of the thimble 40, so thatthbdVi' 39 may be positioned over the cup -35 simply -b'y bringing the two members together and having the screw member 42 turned into screw-threaded enspacing between the edge 29 and the edge 30 is made to be such that the tape end portion 25 may be inserted laterally therethrough to come under a pressure roller 32 which is mounted on an axle 33 carried by its ends through the bar 26 and the end portion 28. This roller 32 while not necessarily so, is preferably made out of a rubber-like material so as to be slightly resilient. On the under side of the web there is secured a finger 63 which is directed toward the roller 32 and has a pointed end 34 which is spaced from the roller 32 just that distance which would cause it to contact the tacky side of thetape end portion 25-and hold itagainst the roller 32. There may be af slight pressure between that finger end 34 and the tape end 25 to cause it to be snugly positioned against the roller 32. In other words there is noi tendency of the tape 25 to be free from the roller 32 in that zone of contact by the finger 34.
The tape end portion 25 is positioned asjust described and as illustrated in Fig. 1, so thatthe tape may then be applied-to'any desired surface simply by pulling'the handle .I I to the left, with theroller 32 pressing down on the tape 25 to press it against that surface. Then when the desired length of tape has been so applied, the handle I I may be lifted' while the roller 32 remains in compressive contact against the tape 25 and in 'a position to press'the tape 25 against that surface until a cutting knife 64 comes into contact with the tape 25 and. thereupon, the handle Il may be twisted and lifted slightly to either side to cause the tapeto be out 01f thereby. As indicated, Fig. 2, this knife 64 is preferablyof a serrated nature, and is mounted-on the crossbar portion 21 to extend slightly therebelow, but normally up outof contact with the tape 25 when the tape is being applied to its surface intended to receive it. p 7 The operator'grips the handle II, and may press the spring 22 forwardly toward the roller in order to hold that roller 20 againstrotation when the tape is being cut off, or during the applying operation if so desired. The spring 22 primarily is employed to retain the roll of tape 20in its position between the arms [3 and -l4 so it does not tend to rise and be lifted therefrom.
Referring now to that form of the invention as illustrated in Figs 5-9, this form is primarilyintended to be of ..a type which may be readily held in the palm of an operator's hand, it being understood that the size of the structure as-show'n in the drawing is of an exaggerated size.
In this form, there isa receptacle 35 generally of a. cup-like nature. It consists of the side wall 36 having an annular wall 31 extending therefrom. The central portion of the wall 36 is pressed inwardly to form'athimble 38 around the circumferential portiorf of which there may be received a hollow'coreZl of the roll of tape 20; IA'retaining cover 39 is formed to be circular in shape to extend over the wall 31to seat theregagement with the member M by revolving the cover 39.
The annular wall 31 is continued in a tangential section 42 in one zone of the cup 35 relatively downwardly to a, lower edge 43 which is carried inwardly therefrom and at right angles thereto, and slightly above a tangential foot portion 48. This straight wall length 42 isunited to an extended side section 44 integral with the wall 36, and from the'opposite side of the section 42, there is turned around in parallel relation to the portion 44 a flange'45 which has its upper edge out in an arcuate' manner to conform to the curvature of the cover .33, Fig. 5. Between the lower end portion of thisfiange 45, and the extended wall portion 44, is revolubly carried a pressure roller,46 on an axle 41 mounted in close proximity to the lower edge :43.
The wall portion 48 terminates primarily back a distance from the roller'46, by an edge 50, and is provided with an integral tongue 49 extending centrally'from the terminal edge 50 to be directed toward the surface of the roller 46, in such manner that the end portion 25 of the tape coming from the roll 20 will be held firmly against the roller 46. The tongue 49 terminates in a point 5| 'which'is in actual contact with the tacky side of the tape 25. The flange 45 terminates by a relatively rear vertical edge 52, and there is an upturned flange 53 from the portion4l3 termi nating by a vertical edge 54.- There is a space left between the two vertical edges 52 and 54 so that the end portion 25 from the roll of tape 20 may be manipulated between the roller "46 and the tongue point5l when the cup 35 is initially loaded with the tape 20. v V r The wall portion 42 is provided with apressed outwardly band 5'5 so that a cut-off knife 56 may have an upper portion 5! thereof frictionally carried across the front faceof that wall portion. 42 and under the band 55 and thence on up by a short length thereabove so as to be retained thereby. The knife 56 is preferably provided. with an under serrated edge 61, and there is anj outwardly springing 'tongue 58 bearing against the under edge of: the band 55 so as to hold the knife 56 in a fixed position of elevation in respect to upwardpressure.
JIo use this form of structure thus described in regard to'Figs. 5-9, the cup 35 having been l-oaded with the roll 20; and the cover Z19v placed in its closedpositionasindicated in the draw ing, is held in the palm of the operators hand, to have the end portion 2i5jpressed down on the surface; to which-the tape is" to Joe applied, by pushing the roller 46 thereagainst,whereupon the; device ispulled :thereaway from; the 'initial zone :of contact, until the, desired length of tape -25 has been pulled outwardly and pressed' down onto that surface, whereupon the entire device is .rockedover until theiedge'filof .the knife '56 is broughtfinto contactwith thetape; and then the device is given a slight twist to one side to cause the edge 61 to sever the tape.
While I have herein shown and described my invention in the two specific forms, it is obvious that structural changes may be employed Without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore do not desire to be limited to those precise forms beyond the limitations which may be imposed by the following claim.
I claim:
An applicator to apply a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape from a contained roll, one side of the tape having a sensitive, tacky adhesive side, and the other side being non-sensitive and nonadhesive, comprising a tape roll carrier having a presser foot portion, and a front wall portion disposed vertically to said foot portion with an opening through the foot portion adjacent the front wall, both said foot and said front wall being spaced from said roll and being tangential thereto to be at substantially right angles one with the other; side Walls extending between said foot portion and said front wall; a pressure roller revolubly carried by and between said side walls to have an under side peripheral portion below REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
