1 Claim. -(Cl.-216-33) The present invention relates to tape dispensers and is more particularly concernedwith'a combinationadhesive tape dispenser, applier and severer.
The principal object of the invention. isto provide-a device for supporting a roll of -tape"havingan adhesive upon only one surface thereof and accompanying' struc ture whereby the tapecan be'applied' to a surface for sealing purposes, severed when su'flicient lengths of the tape are so applied-and the end portion of the tape retained ready tori-further use when required.
Another and equally important o'bject of the invention is to provide a device which can be economically produced rendering the same commercially feasible'asa tape applier and which applier requires-only'one'hand of-the user to apply various lengths of tape to surfaces-andsever thetape as required.
A still further important object of the invention-is'to provide a holder for a roll of tape preferably of the type having a pressure sensitive adhesive 'upon the surface thereof which holder can be fabricated from sheet material and yet is sufiiciently sturdy :to press the tape in position when'being applied as wellas'ithe-twists occurring during the severing of the tape.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tape applier that eliminates the use of rollers and has atape end. guide and storing member which permits ready access to the roll of tape'for placing the tape end in position for being retained with'its adhesive surface covered until required for further use.
Further objects of the invention'will be in partr obvious and in part pointed out in the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring more -in'detail to the accompanying-drawings wherein like; and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters, numerall refers'to'a side plate of the body of the present tapeapp'lier whichhas a-similar side plate in. Side 1 has a ringshaped portion 2 from which' extends a circular inwardly tapering, flange 4. Sidelahas a similar ring shaped portion -3 with an annular inwardly tapering flange 5. :Said fiangesare diametrically opposite to one another and are inset-table within the relief tapeA- for rotatably supporting the same.

In the operation of the present device, a roll of tape preferably of the type having a tacky and non-drying adhesive upon one face thereof which adhesive will stick to a surface upon the application of pressure to the nonadhesive side of the tape is mounted upon the flanges 4 and 5 by separating plates 1 and 1a which due to the resiliency of the material will snap back with said flanges entering the bore of said roll A. The tape will normally retain its rolled condition due to the adhesive surface thereof somewhat sticking to the non-adhesive surface therebeneath. The free end portion B of the roll A is inserted through guide opening 31 whereupon it will assume the position as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. That is, below, but spaced from presser foot 12 with the adhesive surface facing downwardly. To assist in quickly and easily withdrawing said free end B from the roll, hooks 29 and 30 are unsnapped from side In permitting fingers 27 and 28 to drop downwardly by hooks 23 and 24 0 sliding through openings 25 and 26 of side 1. This unsnapping can be quickly effected by inserting a finger in recess 15 and forcing downwardly upon one of said fingers 27 or 28. The end portion B can then be pulled from the roll. Upon returning fingers 27 and 28 to their horizontal position and resnapping hooks 29 and 30 over the bottom edge of side 1a, finger 28 will engage the end portion B and push the same forwardly under the presser foot 12 due to said finger 28 being very close to the side of said presser foot and also forwardly of the periphery of the roll A. When it is desired to apply the tape to a surface, the present device is held in one hand as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawing with the forefinger pressing on the finger plate and stop 8 and 9. This finger plate is positioned above the bottom 11 and therefore to one side of the presser foot 12 causing the device to pivot upon said presser foot with the forward end moving downwardly as permitted by the slanted bottom 11, raising the portions 2 and 3 upwardly into .the palm of the users hand. The presser foot 12 then presses upon the tape B 'therebeneath pulling the applier along in the direction to which the tape is to be applied, the tape will unreel from the roll A and adhere to the surface therebeneath.
As soon as a sufficient length.of tape has thus been applied, further downward pressure on the forefinger and a. twisting motion of the entire device will place the cutting teeth 19.across the tape for quickly and easily severing the same. As shown in Fig. 10, a length of tape can be pulled from the roll A and severedtherefrom by pressing one finger against the tape beneath the presser foot and then pulling the tape across the teeth 19.
After the tape has been so severed, the free end thereof can be drawn backwardly across the fingers 27 and 28 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings. The adhesive will temporarily retain the tape across said fingers with the non-adhesive side positioned below the applier. By simply inserting the finger in recess 15, the tape'can be pulled loose from said fingers 27 and 28 whereuon it will again assume its position beneath said presser foot and be ready for further use.
It is. to be appreciated that the pressures applied to the present applicator when in use are in the vicinity'of the legs 6 and 7 which are firmly held together by the intermediate section forming the portions 8 and 12 inclusive. The portions 2 and 3 are free for being'separated for readily receiving the roll A. The end 10 can be an intermediate section of a piece 'of sheet material with the sides 1 and 1a extending therefrom and the finger support 8 as well as the bottoms 11 and 12 can be formed from' the top and bottom of said intermediate section and fastened to legs 6 and 7 in any suitable manner such as by curled end portions extending over said legs. Further, fingers 27 and 28 tend to prevent the spreading of the lower part of said plates 1 and 1a when in use. The edges of the sheet material are indicated as being rolled in the drawings for the purpose of adding stifiness thereto. A plastic or metallic material may be used.
The present device is capable of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the appended claim are deemed to be a part of the invention.
I claim:
A tape dispenser and applier comprising a casing having a substantially U-shaped longitudinal configuration with the base of said casing forming an end wall and the legs a pair of substantially parallel resilient side walls free at their outer ends, projections carried by said walls for rotatably and detachably supporting a roll of tape therebetween, a bottom plate conected to and extending from said end wall along and connecting the lower edges of a portion of said side walls adjacent said end wall, said bottom plate having a longitudinally curved semi-circular portion positioned outwardly of said side wall lower edges forming a tape presser foot, a finger pivotally connected to the medial portion of one of said walls adjacent the lower edge thereof and capable of extending to the medial portion of the other of said walls for guiding the tape from a roll to and beneath said presser foot, means for connecting said finger, to the other of said walls for detachably connecting said walls holding said tape roll therebetween, said end wall having 'a further extension extending between said side walls adjacent the upper edges thereof and above said presser foot providing a finger rest for permitting the manual pressing downwardly of said casing and a cutter blade carried by said end wall with the cutting edge thereof being below said side wall lower edges.
