(Cl. 2-132 This invention relates to a tie attachment and more specifically provides a tie which is pre-tied and attached to a transversely extending member which is positioned beneath a collar and includes resilient members engaging the wings of a collar for positioning the collar wings and also securing the tie attachment under the collar.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a tie attachment wherein a pre-tied tie may be easily and quickly secured to a shirt collar in a manner wherein the wings of the shirt collar are held in a neat appearing position.

A further object of this invention is to provide a tie attachment which is simple in construction, quickly and easily installed or removed and so constructed so as to lend itself to economical manufacture.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a tie attachment which is secured to a tie and which may be readily removable from the collar of a shirt wherein various ties may be easily assembled with the device.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the tie attachment of this invention in assembled position under a shirt collar;

Figure 2 is an elevational view similar to Figure 1 with the tie attachment of this invention removed from under the shirt collar;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal, vertical section taken substantially along section line 33 of Figure 2 showing details of the transverse member and one of the downwardly projecting rods;

Figure 4 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially along section line 4-4 of Figure 1 showing details of the transverse member and the manner in which the tie is secured thereto;

Figure 5 is an elevational view of a modified form of the tie attachment of this invention; and

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the modified form of this invention as shown in Figure 5 wherein the tie is detachably secured to the transverse member by the use of snap fasteners.

Referring now to the drawings and specifically to Figure 2, it will be seen that the numeral 10 represents one form of the invention and, as shown in Figure 5, the numeral 12 represents a modified form of this invention.

Referring now specifically to Figures 14, the tie attachment 10 includes a transversely extending member 14 constructed of a continuous piece of wire having upper and lower sections and connecting end sections 16. The transverse member 14 is generally curved along the longitudinal length thereof to fit the natural downward curve of a collar 18. Adjacent the end portion 16 and spaced 2,731,642 Patented Jan. 24, 1956 longitudinally therefrom a cross member 20 is secured to the upper and lowerrunsof' the transverse member 14 and extending downwardly from the upper end=of the cross member 20 isa depending ro'd 2-2. As' shown in Figure 3-,. a cylindrical member 24" is slidably received on the lower end of the-rod'22" and the cylindrical member has aclosed bottom portion with projecting; prongs 26 thereon. The cylinder 24 isprovidedwith a closed-longitudinal slot 28 along one edge thereof and a coilspling 30issecu'red to the lower end of the rod 22 and includes an end portion- 32 projecting: tlirough the slot 28 and slidable therein; It' will be seen that the spring 30' is secured to the lower end ofthe rod' 22 and abuts the closedend of the cylinder 24. It will be understood that the spring? 30 permits thecylinder 2'4 -to'be resiliently urged upwardly wherein the prongs 26 may engage the wings 34 of the collar 18 for holding the wing tips in a neat and extended position.

As shown in Figure 4, a necktie 36 is formed with a knot portion 38 extending around the center of the transverse member 14 and projecting therebelow in the conventional manner.

Referring now specifically to the tie attachment as shown in Figures 5 and 6, it will be seen that a plate member 40 is secured to the center portion of the transverse member 14 and extends between the upper and lower runs of the wire and the plate 40 has male snap fasteners 42 secured thereto. The tie 36 has the usual knot 38 thereon and a plate 44 is secured to the rear portion of the knot 38 in a conventional manner and the plate 44 is provided with female snap fasteners 46 for attachment to the snap fasteners 42 wherein the tie 36 is secured to the transverse member 14. It will be seen that the transverse member 14, in each modification of the invention, is generally concave to conform to the contour of a persons neck utilizing the device.

The transverse member 14 is inserted under the collar 18 and the prongs 26 are engaged in the wing tips 34 of the collar 18 wherein the wing tips 34 are retained in an extended and neat looking position. The tie 36 will be held in a correct position and will not become pushed over to one side as so often happens.

In the modification shown in Figures 5 and 6, the tie may be easily interchanged with other colors and designs and the transverse member 14 may be inserted before attaching the tie thereto thereby assuring a quick and accurate attachment of the tie. It will be understood that the transverse member 14 may be made of any suitable material such as sheet metal, plastics or the like as may become economically feasible wherein the sale price of this device will be maintained at a minimum. This tie attachment provides a snap-on tie which obviates the necessity of completely encircling the neck of a wearer with an elastic band and further provides a device for holding the wing tips 34 of the collar 18 as well as the tie in a neat-appearing position. It further facilitates a great time saving in putting on ties as there is no necessity for experimenting with the tie knot and the particular lengths of the end sections of the tie.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

What is clamed as new is as follows:

1. A tie attachment comprising a transversely extending member adapted to be positioned under a collar, downwardly extending rod members secured to said transverse member, said transverse member adapted to support a tie at a point substantially at the center of the former and said rod members being positioned at opposite sides of the tie, a cylinder having a closed lower end slidably mounted on the lower end of each rod member, and having a vertical slot therein, a coil spring in the cylinder under the rod and bearing against the closed end of the cylinder to project the cylinder downwardly, said spring including a horizontal upper end portion connected to the lower portion of the rod and slidable in said slot and at least one prong extending from the lower end of each cylinder.

2. The structure as defined in claim 1, wherein said transverse member is of open-frame construction concaved for conforming to a Wearers neck and longitudinally curved to conform to a collar.

3. The structure is defined in claim 1, wherein said transverse member includes a looped wire member ineluding upper and lower spaced apart bars and connecting end bars and said rods include cross-bars rigidly connected to and bracing said upper and lower bars in wardly of said end bars.

4. The structure as defined in claim 1, wherein said transverse member includes a male snap member adapted to fit a female snap member secured to a tie knot.
