UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. HARRIS, ()F OALLISBURG, TEXAS.
STORE-SHELVING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 273,069, dated February 2'7, 1883.
Application filed August 21, 18853. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. HARRIS, of Callisburg, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented a newand Improved Store Shelving, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide against the taking fire of store-shelving, in case of fire, while removing the same with the goods.
The invention consists in store-shelving constructed substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and provided with a covering of sheet metal to make it partially fire-proof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective view of the shelw ing of a store embodying my improvement.
A table, A, is supported by four cornerlegs, B, provided with casters or rollers (J. A box, D, of half the width of the table, rests vertically on the same and is attached thereto, which box is open on the front side, and is provided with a series of shelves, E. The remaining half of the table is closed by a hinged top or cover, 1 A box, G, of the same size as the box D,is hinged at its upper inner edge to the upper inner edge of the box D, in such a manner that the said box G can be swung upward to rest on the top of the box D, as shown.
The box G is open on the inner side, and is provided with shelves H. A door, J, is hinged to the inner lower edge of the swinging box G, and the said door is provided at its outer free edge with hooks K, which can be passed into staples or eyes L, fastened to the ceiling, or to rods or bars attached to the ceiling, by means of which hooks and staples the door J can be held raised. The door J is provided at its outer edge with a spring lock, M, which catches in a recess or notch, N, in the under side of the top of the swinging box The inner edges of the ends of the swinging box G are provided at or near the free ends with spring-catches 0, which pass into notches or recesses P in the inner edges of the end pieces of the fixed box D. The boxes, legs, and table are covered with zinc or other sheet metal, Q, whereby they will be partly ire-proo As shown, the shelving is in the position for use. Itit is to be closed, the door J is swung down and closed by means of the lock M, and the swinging box G is swung down and is locked by means of the catches 0. at the same time holding the cover 1* closed.
Boxes, &c., are to be placed in the table that is, below the fixed box D and the cover F. In case of tire the entire shelving and the goods thereon can easily be removed from the store. The latches 0 look the entire shelving.
The shelving can be made any desired size, as circumstances may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's- The combination, with the herein-described store-shelving, ot'a covering, Q, or sheet metal, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS A. HARRIS.
