UNITD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS J. FREID AND `,ALBERT H. FREID, OF DOW CITY, IOWA.
lRONlNG-TABLE'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,950, dated. February 27, 1883.
Application filed May 2'2, 1882. (No model.) 1
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, A. J. FREID and A. H. FRE1D,of^Dow City, in the county of Ora ford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ironing-Tables; and we do hereby7 declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, referenceheing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view, showing the ironing-table extended. Fig. 2 is a longitudinalvertical sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan, showing the table folded.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to ironing stands or` tables; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the saine, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the top of our improved ironing-stand, the under side of which has, near the rear end,
a cross-piece, B, to the ends of which the legs O G are hinged.
I) D are another pair of legs, hinged or pivoted between the legs O O, so as to fold hetween the latter. y
E is a cross-piece under the frontend of hoard A, against which the legs D, when extended, may abut. The upper ends of the legs D are connected by a round, F, to which is attached a rope or cord, G, wound upon a vertical spindle or shaft, H, journaled in the rear end of the table A. Said shaft has at its upper end a ratchet-wheel, I,.engaging a springpawl, J, pivoted upon the table A. Shaft H is also provided, above the ratchet-wheel I, with a circular perforated plate, K, serving as a handle for turning or manipulating said shalt, and serving also as a holder upon which the fiatron may be placed While not in use.
Hinged to the front end of the table A is an extension, L, forming a bosom-board. Attached to the outer end of said extension is a rod, M, of twisted wire, formed with a loop,
N, the ends of which are connected with the end of the hinged leaf L by springs O, which serve to retain said loop in position.
Pis a holder or tightener consisting of a.
wire`bail hinged tothe end of table A and accommodated in al recess, Q, near the end of the same.
RR are. leaf-supports sliding longitudinally in suitable grooves or bearingsforined in the cross-piece E under the table A, andserving, when extended, to support the hinged leal L. The under side of the latter is smooth and polished, so as to form a polishing-board when the said leaf is folded back upon the table A. iVhen this is done the slides R are pushed back, so as to be out of the way.
The operation of our invention will be readily understood. When not in use the legs may be folded together under the table A, so as to be ont of the way. When extended the upper ends of the legs D may abut against the crosspiece E; or, if the table is found to be too low, the shaft H may he turned so as to wind cord G, thus bringing the legs together and raising the table. By releasing the spring'pawl from the ratchet the table may again be lowered. To place a shirt upon 'the bosom-board the latter is raised and the shirt slipped over it until the neckband is adjusted over the loop N. The shirt-tail is then drawn under the tightener P, which is then forced into the groove or recess Q,and the board L is finally lowered, thus stretching the shirt-bosom out smoothly and evenly.-
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the table A, having groove Q and hinged bail P, of the hinged leaf L, havingrod M, provided with loop N, and springs O, as and for the purpose set forth.
.ln testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
AMOS J. FREID.
ALBERT H. FB'EID.
