Description

No Model.) I
A. J. UPHAM.
BARBED METAL STRIP FENCING. No. 272.923. Pdtented Feb. 27, 1883.
N. PETERS, womuuw m. wamin mn. ac.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. UIHAM, OF SYCAMORE, ILLINOIS,ASSIGNOR TO THE WASH- BURN 8t MOEN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WORCESTER, MASSA- CHUSETTS, AND ISAAC L. ELLWOOD, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 272,923, dated February 27, 1883.
Application filed October 9.8, 1882.
Figure 1 represents a view of a section of flat metal strip with my barbed fencing formed on one end thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described. Fig. 2 represents cross sections of the parts A and B, respectively, taken on line l a b, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, same figure; and Fig. '3 represents a section of a strip of metal, such as is used in making my improved fencing, in the manner to be hereinafter described, also showing on same to form two strips of sheet-metal fencing.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the 2 5 same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
. I In the drawings, the part marked 0, Fig. 3,
" represents a strip of thin metal, (also showing the mode,) from which two sections of my iml proved strip-fencing are cut by cutting or sevin such a way as to leave the triangular parts D with pointed ends projecting from one edge of each section of fencing. The lines 00 rcp- 5 resent the cuts made in the strip C preparatory to forming the fencing. After the strip 0 has been cut in the manner above described one end of said strip the mode of cutting the ering the strip C through its central portion (No model.)
the parts D of each section of fence are bent or pressed back upon the body of the fence, and the pointed ends F then bent or turned to up, so as to project out at right angles from the strip of fencing, as clearly shown in the partB, Fig. 1 of the drawings and in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The part A, Fig. 1 of the drawings, showsa modification of my barbed metal-strip fencing, tacks E. being inserted between the edges of the parts I). The fencing may then be drawn through a galvanizing-bath, thus securely fastening the tacks or headed pieces of metal, upon gc which the edges of the parts D press, in place upon the fencing-strip. By cutting two strips of fencing at the same time from the strip C in the manner above described there will be no waste of the fencing material. observed that the ends F of the parts D are bent up about midway of said parts D, so as to rest for support upon the center portion of the strip, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Having described my improvements in barbed metal-strip fencing, what I claim there in as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metal-strip fencing having one edge out with triangular parts D, said parts being bent 6 over upon the body of the strip and the ends F bent up about midway of the strip, and projectin g out therefrom to form points or barbs, substantially as shown and described.
