IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORMING FENCE-BARBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,976, dated December 23, 187% application filed June 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER JENKINS, of the city of J oliet, county of Will, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Punch and Die for the purpose of making sheet-metal four-pointed tongued barbs for barbed-wire fences and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the punches arranged and socketed in a base, as designed for use, F being the diamond-shaped punch, and G the \vedge-sha iied punch, with its rightangled notch h, at its outer upper edge, forming a small punch, I), and having a downward inward bevel, c. The punches are held in place by set-screws w y. The punch G- is slightly higher than the punch F, and is used to form the tongue of the barb and to assist in forming two of the projecting points.
Fig. 2 is a view of the punches F G, looking vertically down upon them.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the die K as ar ranged for use, showing the Y-shaped opening, this Y-shaped opening being of suitable and corresponding shape and size to easily receive the punches in forming the barb. The stem of the Y receives the wedge-shaped punch G, with the inward bevel and rightangle notch, and the mouth or receding arms of the Y receives the inner half of the diamond shaped punch F. This die is constructed in two equal parts, as indicated by the line 6, and is connected together by any suitable pin, (not shown in the drawings,) the object being that the die may be taken apart and sharpened or repaired. The Y-shaped opening is narrowest, and the lines or edges thereof most perfectly formed at the upper surface of the die K, to form a close tit with the punches and insure a perfect cutting of the barb and its tongue; and the walls of the opening recede from each other as they descend, so as to enlarge the space below the surface of the die, to permit the tongue of the barb, which is bent down into this space in forming, to be easily withdrawn without coming in contact with the side walls of the opening.

The points of the punches F and G are placed and held far enough apart to leave intact sufficient metal between them to form the body of the barb, and the die and punches are set in any suitable machine to operate them, so that the half of the diamond-shaped punch, adjacent to the other punch, shall fall between the upper arms of the Y-shaped opening of the die, and the punch G shall fall into the lower portion or stem of the Y. The die is made stationary, and the punches play up and down together. being elevated above its upper surface sufficient to allow the metal ofwhich the barb is formed to pass between, and pressed down sufficiently below to cut the barb and form the tongue.
