Description
Jan. 3, 1956 J. McEWAN SAW JOINTER Filed Oct. 6, 1953 United States PatentO 2,729,120 SAW 10mm; James McEwan, San e, Ca Application October 6, 1953, Serial No. 384,463
4 Claims. (CI. 76-47) The present invention is concerned with saw jointers, and relates more particularly to an improved construction which is easy to use and which facilitates the installation and use of either a triangular file or a flat file.
It is a general object of the invention to provide an improved saw jointer which is convenient to use and hold in the hand, which provides for engagement with the side of a saw to hold its teeth in position, for jointing, and which is economical to manufacture and easy to use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a saw jointer of the above character in which either triangular or fiat files can be employed, without change in the construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the jointer illustrating the jointer held in relation to a saw.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the jointer.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view with certain parts shown in section.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of the file-holding ele ment showing a flat file in place against the element.
Figure 5 is an end elevational view similar to Figure 2, but showing a fiat file in place in the jointer.
Referring to the drawings, the jointer includes a hollow body having a substantially T-shaped recess 11 extending therethrough, the bar of the T providing for mounting of a file holder 12 having a file 13 mounted therein, and the leg of the T being narrow and providing an opening or slot 15 for receiving a saw blade 14. The file holder 12 is pivotally mounted in the body by means of pivot pins 16 which are pressed in bosses 17 of the body and are journalled in bearing portions 18 of the file clamping member or holder 12. At the side opposite to its pivotal mounting, the file holder 12 is provided with a slotted extension 19 in which a screw 21 is pivotally secured by means of a pin 22. The screw 21 extends through an aperture in the body 10 and receives a knurled clamping nut 23, a compression spring 24 being provided about the screw 21 and interposed between a fiat surface 26 of the body and the slotted extension 19 of the file holder 12. Thus the file holder is spring urged away from active position and can be moved into active file holding position by adjustment of the screw 23.
In order to provide for selective mounting of either a flat or triangular file, the file holder is provided with a V-shaped recess 27 extending longitudinally thereof and having a pair of flat surfaces 28 at either side of the V-shaped recess. When a triangular file is to be used, it is engaged with the V-shaped locating recess 27 and the nut 23 is tightened to clamp it in place over the saw receiving slot between the two opposed walls 31 of the body member 10. When a flat file 13a is to be used 2,729,120 Patented Jan. 3, 1956 2 as shown in Figure 5, the two surfaces 28 engage the flat file and press it against the flat walls 26 within the body. Thus either a. triangular or a flat file can be securely clamped in place in the jointer.
In order to maintain the saw blade in position in the jointer to insure the tops of the teeth being jointed square with the saw, a positioning member 36 is provided having an extension 37 which projects through a slot 38 in one of the Walls 31 and has a saw engaging face substantially parallel to the opposed wall 31. The positioning member may be made of wax-impregnated fiber to reduce friction. The member 36 is pivotally mounted by a screw 41 in a pair of vertically spaced apart ear portions 42 of the body, and the member 36 is recessed at 43 to receive a compression spring 44 by means of which it is urged to inactive position. A pair of ear portions 42 are provided at each end of the body so that the member 36 can be reversed in position when the saw jointer is used by a left-handed person as compared with the position shown, which is proper for a righthanded person.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown, so that the scope thereof should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a saw jointer comprising a substantially T-shaped body having a substantially T-shaped recess therein including a bar portion and a narrow leg of the recess extending from the bar portion of the recess to one side of the jointer and forming a saw receiving slot, the bar portion of said T-shaped recess having a flat file engaging surface at the inner end of said slot, a file clamping member movably mounted in said body at one side of the bar portion of said recess and extending across said slot, spring means urging said member away from said slot, an adjusting member for' urging said clamping member to clamping position, said clamping member having a V-shaped recess therein in alignment with said slot and a flat file engaging surface at either side of the recess, whereby a flat file or a triangular file can be selectively clamped in said jointer.
2. In a saw jointer, a body having an enlarged portion shaped to be gripped by the hand of a person, a transverse opening extending longitudinally through said enlarged portion, and opposite wall members projecting outwardly from said wall portion in a direction away from said enlarged portion, said spaced wall portions forming therebetween a saw receiving slot, a file clamping member pivoted along one edge of said enlarged portion and extending across the opening therein to overlap said saw receiving slot, and adjusting means connected to said pivoted member and extending outside of said body on the side thereof opposite to the pivotal mounting of said clamping member.
3. In a saw jointer, a body having an enlarged portion shaped to be gripped by the hand of a person, a transverse opening extending longitudinally through said enlarged portion, and opposite wall members projecting outwardly from said wall portion in a direction away from said enlarged portion, said spaced wall portions forming therebetween a saw receiving slot, a file clamping member pivoted along one edge of said enlarged portion and extending across the opening therein to overlap said saw receiving slot, said member having a V-shaped recess extending parallel to said slot and a surface at either side of said recess, and adjusting means connected to said pivoted member and extending outside of said body on the side thereof opposite to the pivotal mounting of said clamping member.
4. A saw jointer comprising a substantially T-shaped body having a substantially T-shaped recess therein including a bar portion and a narrow leg of the recess extending from the bar portion of the recess to one side of the jointer and forming a saw receiving slot, the bar portion of said T-shaped recess having a fiat file engaging surface at the inner end of said slot, a file clamping member movably mounted in said body and extending across said slot, said clamping member having a V fiat file engaging surface at either side of the recess,
one wall of said slot having an elongated opening formed therein, and an elongated positioning member pivotally mounted at one end of said opening for engagement with a saw in said slot under manual pressure of a 5 person grasping said jointer in his hand.
