Definitions
- This invention relates to the bleaching of textile materials made of synthetic linear polyamides of the nylon type.
- synthetic linear polyamides are those described in U. S. patents such as Nos. 2,071,250, 2,071,253, 2,130,948 and 2,359,877. These synthetic linear polyamides are characterized by the presence of repeating carbonamide units having the structural formula
- One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a new and improved method for bleaching textile materials of the kind indicated, either in the form of artificial threads or fibers or in the form of fabrics knit or woven from such threads or fibers, in such manner as to bleach them without impairing the strength of the fibers in any way.
- a further object of the invention is to provide a method for successfully bleaching polyamide materials of the foregoing nature with hypochlorite solutions while avoiding previously known disadvantages attendant upon the use of hypochlorite solutions for the purpose indicated.
- the antecedent bleaching operation may be performed in different ways and also at widely differing pH values.
- the bleaching may be performed at room temperature with a hypochlorite solution containing 0.5 g./l. of active chlorine at a pH of either 8-10 or 3-4, and over a period that may vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
- an aftertreatment with a hydrosulfite solution for example, 1 g./l. of Na2S2O4
- a time of treatment of five minutes is generally sufiicient, but this may be extended for example to 30 minutes, if desired.
- the bleaching agent may be employed in the form of calcium hypochlorite solutions or alkali metal hypochlorite solutions such as sodium or potassium hypochlorite solutions, and the reducing agents may be employed in the form of their alkali metal salt solutions such as sodium or potassium salt solutions or, in the case of the hydrosulfite, solutions of the addition compounds referred to above.
- a method for the bleaching of textile materials comprising a synthetic linear polyamide comprising treating such materials with a hypochlorite, and then with a reducing agent at a temperature above 80 C.
- a method for the bleaching of textile materials comprising a synthetic linear polyamide comprising treating such materials with a solution yielding hypochlorite ions, and then with a solution of a reducing agent at a temperature higher than 80 C.
- a method for the bleaching of textile materials comprising a synthetic linear polyamide comprising bleaching such materials with an aqueous solution of a hypochlorite selected from the class consisting of calcium and alkali metal hypochlorites, and then with an aqueous solution of a reducing agent at a temperature of about 90-95 C.
- a hypochlorite selected from the class consisting of calcium and alkali metal hypochlorites
- a method for the bleaching of textile materials comprising a synthetic linear polyamide comprising treating such materials with an aqueous solution yielding hypochlorite ions, rinsing the textile materials in order to remove most of the hypochlorite solution, and thereafter removing residual chlorine from said textile materials by treating same with an aqueous solution of a compound selected from the class consisting of hydrosulfites and addition compounds of hydrosulfites at a temperature above C.
- a method for the bleaching of textile materials comprising a synthetic linear polyamide comprising treating such materials with an aqueous solution of a hypochlorite selected from the class consisting of calcium and alkali metal hypochlorites, rinsing the textile materials in order to remove most of the hypochlorite solution, and thereafter removing residual chlorine from said textile materials by treating same with an aqueous solution of a compound selected from the class consisting of hydrosulfites and addition compounds of hydrosulfites at a temperature of approximately -95 C.
