United States Patent F COMBINED STAND AND LID FOR A GARBAGE PAIL John Burgh, Denver, Colo.
Application October 13, 1953, Serial No. 385,805
1 Claim. (Cl. 248-147) This invention relates to a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail.
It is a principal object of this invention to provide a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail to support a garbage can out of doors at a determined location and at a desired height from the ground so that garbage may be deposited in the pail by persons of different height as by children or persons of a short or tall height and having a lid hingedly connected to the stand spring pressed to a covering position on the upwardly open garbage pail.
It is another object of this invention to provide a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter having an adjustable base for a garbage pail and a cover hingedly mounted on the base spring pressed to a garbage pail closing and sealing position to prevent animals from removing the lid from the pail and insects from entering the pail between the lid and the open end of the pail.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail of this kind having a flanged supporting base for the garbage pail which is provided with drain openings for the free passage of water and any floating dirt therefrom and threadably engageable supporting posts engaging the base for suitably adjusting the stand to a selected, desired, height.
It is yet a further object of this invention to provide a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail of this kind having a lid supporting arm which may be adjusted on a pivoted arm carried by the stand for properly covering and sealing a garbage pail of one of the various sizes of garbage pails presently in use and commercially available.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail of this kind which may be constructed at a reasonable price for wide distribution and easily moved from one position on the ground to another without the necessity of tools for disassembling the combined stand and lid.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation of a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional view, partly broken away and partly in section of the upper end of the combined stand and lid for the garbage pail.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the combined stand and lid for the garbage pail shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings the numeral designates generally a combined stand and lid for a garbage pail to be located outside of a house and is provided with a suitable stand for supporting the garbage pail and a spring pressed lid for closing the upper open end of the garbage pail.
2,726,833 Patented Dec. 13, 1955 The combined stand and lid 10 is formed with a suitable anchor or base 11 which may be moved freely about the ground adjacent to a house by a person having sufficient strength to lift the anchor or base upwardly from its engagement with the ground. The anchor 11 is preferably made of a large sheet of metal but the anchor may also be an anchor within the ground.
An upstanding post 12 is secured on the upper side of the anchor 11 and extends vertically upwardly therefrom the lower end of the post being threadedly engaged or otherwise fixed to the upper side of the anchor 11 so that the post 12 is moved about with the anchor and may provide a suitable gripping means for raising the anchor upwardly out of its flush engagement with the supporting ground.
The upper end of the post 12 is formed with threads 13 with which the stand 14, for supporting a garbage pail R may be secured on the upper end of the supporting post 12.
A boss 15 is formed on the lower side of the stand 14 and is provided with a downwardly opening central bore threaded on the inner surface thereof, for threaded engagement with the threads 13 of the upper end of the post 12. The stand 14 may be threaded onto the upper end of the post with the upper end of the threaded post 12 in its threaded engagement in the bore 16 providing for the vertical adjustment of the stand 14 above the anchor 11.
In some instances it may be more desirable to provide a supporting plate 14 on the uppersurface of the stand 14 with upwardly extending flanges 17 about the periphery of the plate so that when a pail R is supported on the upper surface of the plate 14', it is held against lateral sliding movement otf from the stand 14.
A plurality of drain openings 18 are formed at the lower end of the flanges 17 through which water escapes. Bolts 19 are extended through the stand 14 and the plate 14 for positioning the flanges and plate 14 onto the upper side of the stand 14.
One end of the stand 14 is formed with an ear 2%) extending outwardly therefrom to act as a base for the pivotal supporting means of the top or cover of the pail R. The ear 20 is formed with a downwardly and outwardly extending flat stop surface 21 to act as a limit stop for the pivotal movement of the pail cover engaging means to be described hereinafter.
An upstanding arm 22 is pivotally connected to the stand 14 by way of a pivot through the car 29 and the lower end of the upstanding arm 22 is provided with a pair of horizontally spaced apart ears 23 for engagement on the opposite sides of the ear 20. A pivot pin 24 is engaged through registering openings in the ears 20 and 23 for pivotally supporting the upstanding arm 22 for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis.
A supporting lever 25 is carried by the upstanding arm 22 and is slidably connected to the upstanding arm 22 by a pair of clamp jaws 26, at one end of the supporting lever 25 which jaws engage about the upstanding arm 22 on the opposite sides thereof to provide for the sliding movement of lever 25 vertically upwardly on the upstanding arm 22. A clamp pin 27 is engaged through the outer ends of the clamp jaws 26 for clampingly securing the clamp jaws 26 into clamping engagement with the upstanding arm 22.
'A handle 28 is secured to the other end of the supporting lever 25 by which the lever 25 and upstanding arm 22 may be pivoted by manual force about the pivot pin 24 when it is desired to open the cover from the receptacle.
A collar 29 is slidably fixed on the supporting lever 25 for movement along the length thereof. A lid 30 is connected to the supporting lever 25 by way of the collar 29 and the shaft 31 which is slidably secured at one end to the lid 3t? and has the other end fixed to the collar 29.
A coil spring 33 is positioned about the shaft 31 having one end of the spring bearing against the collar 29 and the otherend of the spring bearing against the lid or cover 30 for constantly urging the lid outwardly from the supporting lever 25 to a position for resiliently closing the upper open end of the pail R carried by the stand 14. The end of the shaft engaging the lid is secured to the lid through a pair of washers 34 on the inside and outside of the lid by a suitable fastener, such as a cotter pin 35 which is extended through the shaft and outwardly of the adjacent inner Washer. V
The lid is concavo-convex with the concave side engageable with the upper edge of the pail R so that the downwardly and outwardly inclined edge of the lid in engagement with the upper edge of the pail R forms a seal for preventing the escape of odors and the entrance of vermin to the garbage pail.
The handle 2S-is manipulated in a vertical plane as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 in opening and closing the garbag e pail. It is to be noted in Fig. 3 that the center of gravity of the moving parts is to the left of a vertical line through pivot pin 24. This places the lid 39 at rest out of the way of pail R; When the 'lid is closed, the weight acting downwardly on lid 39 through the resilient pressure of spring 33 keeps the top 30 sealed on pail R. Due to the concave under side of lid 30, as it approaches the pail it slides to seating position as spring 33 is put under slight compression, assuring a proper seal. This results from a correct prior vertical. adjustment and positioning of supporting lever 25 on upstanding arm 22 for site sides of said car on said stand, pivotmeans engaging 1 through said ears pivotally connecting the lower end of V ,4 7 described comprising an anchor base, an upstanding supporting post connected at the lower end thereof to said base, said post being threaded at the upper end thereof,
a horizontal stand, a depending boss on the lower side of said stand threadedly engaging said upper end of said post, an upstanding flange on said stand about the circumference thereof, drain openings in said flange adjacent said a stand, an outwardly extending car on the outer edge of said stand, an upstanding arm adjacent said stand, spaced apart ears on one end of said arm engageable on the opposaid upstanding arm to said stand, a supporting lever positioned horizontally above and in vertical spaced relation to said stand, clamping jaws on one end of said lever engageable about said upstanding arm, a clamping means engaging said'clamping jaws for clamping said one end of said lever to said vertically extending arm in a selected position along the length of said arm, a collar slidably adjustable on said lever, a handle on the other endof said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Waehner Apr. 25, 1933 7
