OF PENNSYLVANIA sUnG oALsUo'rIon AND rnnssonn APPARATUS Application fiIed May 5, 1927 Serial No. 188,944.
This invention relates to improvement in surgical suction and pressure apparatus for providing negative pressure for suction for drawing fluids from the body, forproviding pressurefor sprays and for vaporizing ether.
Apparatus of this character includesa botue for containing the liquid to be atomized or sprayed when the apparatus is operated as a pressure device, and for receiving the liquid when the apparatus is used as a suction device, and, in each instance, the bottle is provided with a removable cover having an inlet tube and an outlet tube extending therethrough.
An ob'ect ofmy present invention is'to provide a novel, simple and efiicient means for holding the bottle'in'a fixed position which will permit the. bottle to be easily and V quickly removed and replaced or another substituted for it for filling or emptying pur-- poses. Another object is to provide a novel andadvantageous clamping means which, at oneloperation, Wlll clamp the cover upon the 1 bottle and clamp the bottle upon its support,
" and, at another operation,
will release the bottle and, at the same time, release the cover thereon for its easy removal therefrom.
The invention consists in the novelconstruction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
lnxthe accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention,
Figure l is a side view of an apparatus embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section thereof, on line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 3 designates a supporting base having a post rising edly from the central portion thereof.
Screwed into the upper end portion of the post 4 is a threaded rod or stem 5 carrying a spider 6 which is provided with radially projecting arms '7 which support a table 8 and which have up turned ends 9 confining the table between them. By turning the spider 6 and its stem 5, the table 8 may be adjusted vertically to different positions. A lock nut 10 is provided upon the stem 5 to be screwed against the top of the post 4 to of adjustment.
The outer portion of the table 8 is provided with an" upwardly extending annular flange 11 which surrounds and projects above a yieldable cushion pad 12 of rubber or other material which rests upon the table 8 for receiving and supporting a bottle 13.
The bottle 13 is provided with a cover 14 which rests upon the top of the neck 15 thereof. .The cover 14 comprises a body portion 16 having a downwardly extending annular flange 17 which surrounds the bottle neck 15 and positions the cover 14 centrally thereon. Extending through the body portion 16 of thecover' are inlet and outlet tubes 18 and l9, respectively, which are fixed in the body portion 16. These tubes 18 and 19 may extend down into the bottle any desired distance suitable for the purpose for which the bottle is used.
lVithin the flange 17 and secured to the body portion 16 of the cover 14 is a yieldable upon the top, of the bottle neck 15 and which surrounds the tubes 18 and 19.
Connected to the post 4 and extending rear wardly from the back thereof is an arm 21 carrying a standard 22 which rises from the rearward end of the arm. The upper end of the standard is provided with a forwardly extending arm 23 the forward end of which supports a vertically-extending tubular guide 24 comprising anupper portion 25 formed integral with the arm 23 and a lower portion 26 screwed into the upper portion 25.
The tubular guide 24 is arranged in axial alinement with the bottle 13 and post 4, and a vertically movable rod 27 is slidably contained within the guide 24 and projectsbelow the bottom thereof. 1 The lower end portion of the rod 27 isprovided with a head or clamping member 27 adapted to engage the bottle cover 14 centrally thereof when the rod 27 is lowered.
The upper end of the rod 27 engages a cam 28 formed on a hand operated lever 29. The lever 29 isfulcrumed, at 30, on the upper end portion of the guide 24 which is bifurcated to receive the lever and the cam.
The-rod27 is pressed against the cam 28 by a spring 31 which encircles therod 27 within a the lower portion 26 of the guide 24: and'has its upper end bearing against the bottom of a pin 32. which entends transversely through,
and beyond the rod 27 and beyond the respec vv The lower end of the;
tive sides thereof. spring '31 bears upon an IHWQICllY-GXtQIlClIIlg,
annular flan The forward end of the lever 29 terminates ina suitable handle by means of which the; lever may be'moved'down from the position shown by dot-anddash lines in Fig.1 to the,
position shown by full lines therein andbacli again. The contour of the surface of thecam' 28 against which the rod 27 bears is such that whenthe lever29 is raised to the posi tion shown by dot-and dash lines in Fig. :1,
the cam 28rwill permit the spring 81 to raise the rod 27 and clamping member 21 to the positionshown by similar lines in Fig. l; and that, when the-lever 29'is lowered to the position shown by full linesin Fig. 1, the
*rod 27 and .clamping member :27 will be forced downagainst the action of the spring positionshown similar lines in} 31' to the Fig.1. 7 Shoulders or projections 33 and 34 on the lever 29 are provided to engage the upper portion 25 0f the. guide 24 and limit the up and lines in Fig. 1, the cover 14 will be clamped upon the bottle 13 and the cover and bottle together will be firmly clamped between the.
clamping member'27 and the table 8, the pad 12-and the ringeo yielding, as the clamping membermoves'to its final clamping po'si tion, and making a tight joint between the cover and the bottle and protecting the bottle against breakage. Itwill be understood also thatwhen the lever 29 is raisedto the position shownby dot-and-dash line-s in' Figyl, the
b0ttle'1'3 and cover l lwill befree'd, permitting-the bottleeasily to be removed from the table and the cover the bottle;
The annular flange 11 I on the table Sprovides a means for quickly 4 ge formed on the bottom of the lowerportion 26 of the1guide'24. V f
