More specifically, it is an object of the invention to provide a lighting fixture which may be suspended from the back of furniture, the housing of the fixture being fabricated from light weight sheet metal to lessen strain or wear upon upholstery of the furniture, and by virtue of such light weight metal, protecting brackets are provided for the fixture, formed of a heavier metal to prevent crushing of the housing in the event furniture supporting the fixture is accidentally moved against a wall surface of a room.

Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings,

Attention is first invited to Figure 1 of the drawings, wherein a lighting fixture 10 is shown, comprising an elongated housing 11 for reception of wiring, ballast and the like essential to energizing a fluorescent tube. The housing normally has an open top, upon which a reflector 12 is secured in any approved manner. The receptacle as well as the reflector are fabricated from light sheet metal for the purpose of reducing weight.

The reflector 12 is provided with a medial planiform surface 13 which functions as a closure for the housing when secured thereon and integrally formed with one longitudinal edge of said surface a lateral wing 14 is formed, while upon the other edge of said surface a similar wing 14a is formed, these wings being extended at a slight angle in an upward direction, these wings together with the surface 13 reflect light rays from a fluorescent tube 15 supported in sockets 16 suitably mounted on the surface 13. When so engaged, the arcuate portion 20 will engage the rear of the back rest 28 of the chair. Due to the angular relation of the Wing 14a and the arcuate portion 20, the wing 14 of the reflector will be disposed substantially at a right angle to a wall surface of a room, the cushion element 23 engaging said wall. The brackets would therefore take any thrust and protect the fixture against any crushing action.

The suspension device 24' illustrated in Figure 3 is formed with a penetrating point 29 for securement in the upholstery of a chair.

14 and 14a may have different angular relations with respect to the housing, as shown in Figure 4.

In the construction of the fixture 10 for suspension from a bedstead, the reflector 12' is secured upon the housing as previously described, but in this instance, the bracket is formed as a rectangular open loop 30 as clearly shown in Figure 6, the loop being bent from a suitable guage of steel wire. The side portions 31 of the loop 30 are se cured to the underside of the housing while the bight portion 32 of the loop mounts a cushion element 33. The cushion element is of such length as to contact a series of vertical posts 34 of the bedstead. The terminal ends 35 of the loop are bent so as to lie in a plane parallel to the bight portion 32 and have mounted thereon a cushion element 36. The side portions 31 are slightly offset downwardly from the housing 10 so as to obtain a right angular thrust of the cushion element upon the posts 34.

While I have shown and described preferred forms of the device, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own all such modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A lighting fixture for an article of furniture comprising an elongated housing constructed from light weight sheet metal, a reflector mounted on the top of said housing, said reflector having an upwardly disposed angular wing members at the longitudinal edges thereof, illuminating means mounted upon said reflector positioned between said wing members, brackets secured to said housing transversely beneath said reflector of a length extending a substantial distance beyond said housing, means for suspending said fixture from the back of an article of furniture, one end of each of said brackets having contacting engagement with the back of the article of furniture to maintain the fixture in spaced relation thereto, the other end of each of said brackets having a cushion element on the extremity thereof for engaging the wall of a room when the article of furniture is moved against said wall.

2. A lighting fixture for an article of furniture comprising an elongated housing constructed from light weight sheetmetal, a reflector mounted on the top of said housing, said reflector having an upwardly disposed angular wing members at the longitudinal edges thereof, illumination means' mounted upon said reflector positioned between said wing members, brackets secured to said housing transversely beneath said reflector of a length extending a substantial distance beyond said housing, means for suspending said fixture from the back of an article of furniture, one end of each of said brackets having a downwardly curved arcuate portion disposed beneath one wing of said reflector of contacting engagement with the back of an article of furniture to maintain the fixture in spaced relation thereto, the other end of each of said brackets extending beyond the adjacent wing portion of the reflector and provided at the extremity thereof with an upright stud for mounting a cushion element for engaging the wall of a room when the article of furniture is moved against said wall.

3. A lighting fixture for an article of furniture comprising an elongated housing constructed from light weight sheet metal, means for suspending the fixture from an article of furniture, a reflector mounted on the top of the housing, said reflector having an upwardly disposed angular wing member at the longitudinal edges thereof, illuminating means mounted upon said reflector positioned between said wing members, a supporting bracket in the form of an open rectangular loop having a bight portion, side portions and terminal ends parallel to said bight portion, said side portions being secured to said housing and extending transversely thereof, a cushion member carried by said bight portion and said terminal ends, said bight portion and terminal ends being disposed beneath respective wing members and extending therebeyond to present the cushion member on the bight portion against an article of furniture and said cushion member on said terminal ends against a wall of a room when the article of furniture is moved against said wall.
