SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,424, dated February 20, 1883.

Be it known that I, J. S. GOLD, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Briers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompau ying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in clothes-driers; and it consists in the combination of a suitable support which is to be secured to the wall or other upright, and which has secured to it a circular block having sockets made in its outer edge, and having slots cut in its inner edge for the slides which move back and forth therein, and which slides are connected to the arms, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to provide a clothes-drier, or a support upon which articles of different kinds can be hung,'and in which the arms can be held securely in place in a horizontal position, and then when no longer needed can be turned down out of the way.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, showing the arms in a horizontal position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken just above the circular block; and Fig. 3 is a de- F, in which the headed slides G, connected to tach'cd view of one of the arms, showing the slide connected to it. Fig. 4 is an "enlarged vertical section taken through the block 0.

A represents the back of the support, which may be of any suitable shape or length which may be preferred and which has the shelf or support B, secured-to it at any suitable point. Under this shelf B is placed thecircular piece or block 0, which is braced in place by the support 0, and which has a number of sockets, D, formed in its outer edge to receive the inner ends of the arms E, and a'number of slots,

the inner ends of the arms, move. These slides are provided with heads at their inner ends, so that the heads act as stops to prevent the arms from being drawn out too far. The slides are firstin'serted in place before the block 0 is secured in position, and then the sticks-and arms are pivoted together. The sockets and slots are cut in a direct line with each other, so that the slide and. the arm will always be in a straight line, and thus move with as little frietion as possible. The slot extends inward to within ashort distance of the end of the socket, and the head formed upon the slide prevents it from being withdrawn altogether. This slide serves to attach the arms to'the block, and'allows the arms to be pushed freely back and forth. The arms being pivoted to the outer ends of these slides,'they can be turned down, so as to be out of the way when not needed for immediate use.

a This invention is equally well adapted to be used in the household for drying clothes upon, or for hanging up articles of any kind in stores,

where they are to be displayed to the best advantage.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a device upon which clothes or other articles are to be hung, the combination of the arms with the slides which are pivoted to their inner ends, and theblock having the sockets and slots cut therein, substantially as shown.

- 2. In a clothes-drier, the combination of the back A, the shelf B, under which the circular block E is placed, thearms having the slides pivoted thereto, the circular block having sockets in its outer edge and slots in its inner edge, substantially as set forth.
