S. N. CASTLE... CARRIAGE-BOW.
Patented Feb. 13, 1883 U 0 N v E v. Uh
AUNTITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL N. CASTLE, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE ASHTABULA CARRIAGE BOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CARRIAGE-BOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,374, dated February 13, 1883.
, Application filed October 6; 1882. I (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Bows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer,- ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters'and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in bows for carriages, having for its object to facilitate the manufacture thereof; and it consists in the striking up or making the bow out of sheet metal from a blank having a lateral projection only on one side or on each side, the edges thereof being brazed or beveled, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the bow CASTLE, a
I is made. Fig.2 is a view of my bow as struck up from said blank. Fig. 3 is a cross-section thereof on the line 3 g of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank with only one lateral projection. Fig. 5 is a detail view. Fig. 6 is also a cross-section, and Fig. 7 is a view of a modification of. my invention.
In carrying out my invention I employ a blank of sheet metal, A, from which I strike up my bow-upright. This blank is provided with inclined or somewhat sloping edges, with lateral projections, which are arranged at the larger or upper end of the upright, while these projections form shoulders a a, which meet when the blank is struck up into the upright,
and form the top of a longitudinal slot thus provided in the upright, as seen in Fig.2. In Fig. 4 the slot may be formed as the metal is bent together and the upper edges thereof brought together by making a projection, a,
sides on one side only. By providing the blank with one or more lateral projections the use of an additional or second piecein unitingthe of the blank at their upper edges is avoided. The edges of the metal of the bowupright are brazed or beveled. In Fig. 5 the longitudinal edges of the flanges tions forming the shoulders at are beveled, so as to produce an external and internal flush surface at their meeting-point in bending the blank into the intended shape of the bow-upright. In Fig. 7 the bow-upright has a long V-shaped slot in its middle, in addition to the shoulders or projections, to provide a similar slot on the opposite side thereof. This construction of metal casing permits the ready incasing of the wooden portion or core of the bow-upright.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a carriage-bow, the bow-upright A, having the longitudinal slot extending nearly throughout its lengththat is to say, from the smaller end nearly to the larger end, at which latter point the edges are closed bya projection or projections-all in one piece of metal,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. In a carriage-bow, the upright having a V-shaped opening in one side, and a longitudinal slot extending inwardly from the smaller end and terminating in a flange or flanges in the opposite side, all in one piece of 'metal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3. A blank for a. carriage-bow, formed of a single piece of metal having converging edges, a flange at its larger end, and a V-shaped slot in the center thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL N. CASTLE.
