U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM BOEOHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,200, dated February 13, 1883. Application filed December 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM BOEGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical movements for converting continuous rotary motion into oscillating or rotary reciprocating motion; and it consists in the combination of a rockshat't having a fixed wheel or arm. an eccentric having a suitable pitman, a link connecting said pitma-n to the wheel of the rockshaft, and a guide for the pitman, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the parts in one extreme position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the other extreme position of the parts. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the guide for the pitman. Fig. 4 shows another modification thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the rock-shaft; B, its wheel; (3. the eccentric; D, the pitman; E, the link, and F the guide for the pitman, the wheel being fixed to the rock-shaft, and the pitman having a suitable connection with the eccentric, while the link serves to connect the pitman to the wheel, it practically forming a continuation of the pitman.
Instead of the wheel B, an arm may be used.
One of the conditions necessary to the successful operation of this movement is that the pin or pivot 0, forming the joint between the pitmau D and link E, shall be or remain on one side of the vertical plane of the axis of the rock-shaft, in any position of the parts, and to fulfill such condition is the function ofthe guide F of the pitman. In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said guide F consists of an cehaving fitted therein the joint-pin 0, the latter 'being extended at one end for this purpose.
When a continuous rotary motion is given to the eccentric O,'the wheel B, together with the rock-shaft, obtains a rotary reciprocating motion from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, and vice versa. The motion of the rock-shaft is over or through an arc of ninety degrees, (more or less,) due to which fact this movement can be used to advantage in sewing-machines for obtaining from the upper or needle-driving shaft the pioper motion of the shuttle-shalt; but it is evident that the same can be used for various other purposes to which such motion may be applied.
An important advantage of the movement is, that the link is left free of any intermediate pivotal connections, and the only wearingpoints liable to afi'ect the rock-shalt are the pivots at the ends of the link. 7
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the rock-shaft having the fixed wheel or arm, the eccentric having a suitable pitman, the link connecting said pitman to the wheel of the rock-shaft, and the guide for the pitman.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
