UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOIS WAITE MOOLUNG, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
HAND-OPERATING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,296, dated May 3, 1887.
Application filed August 26, 1886. Serial No. 212,056. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOIS WAITE MoCLUNc, of Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Operating Attachment for Sewing-Machines, of which the followiugis a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates'to a cheap, durable,
' and efficient attachment for sewing-machines,
whereby said machines may be driven by hand, the several parts of the attachment being, however, arranged so as not to interfere with the ordinary foot-driving mechanism of the machine.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved attachment, representing the same as applied to a machine, the view being taken on a vertical line just inside ofthe right-hand side frame of the machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on line y y of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the construction illustrated in the drawings, represents the table, 11 the left-hand sideof the frame, and 12 the stud upon which the balancewheel 13 is mounted. 14 is the treadle, which is connected to a crank pin, 15, carried bythe balance-Wheel 13 by the pitman or connectingrod 16, the construction described being that ordinarily embodied in a machine designed to be driven by the feet of the operator.
In order that the machine described may be driven by hand, I arrange a lever, 20, to which there is hinged a handle, 21, (this hinge being shown at 3,) said lever being pivotally connected to the upper end of a vertical bar, 22, which bar is connected to the right-hand frame 23 by means of bolts 24, said bolts passing through sleeves 25, arranged between the bar 22 and the frame 23; and in order that the height of the bar 22 may be adjusted to suit the convenience of the operator I form thebar with two longitudinal slots, 2, through which the bolts 21 pass. To the inner end of the lever there is pivotally connected a curved arm, 26, the lower end of which arm is connected to the connecting-rod 16, as clearly indicated.
Such being the general construction of the attachment, it will be seen that if a rocking motion be imparted to the lever 20 the balance-wheel l3, and with it the crankshaft 12, will be revolved, which motion of the shaft will, as will be readily understood, impart the required movement to the operating parts of the machine carried by the table 10, and it will be readily understood that the lever 20 may be adjusted to suit the convenience of the operator by raising or lowering the bar 22.
When it is desired to operate the machine by foot-power, the handle 21is turned back out of the way upon the hinge-joint but in practice it will be found that by leaving the handle in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1 the machine may be driven alternately by foot or by hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with an adjustable supporting-bar arranged for attachment to the frame of the machine, of alever pivotally connected thereto, and a link pivotally connected to the inner end of the lever and arranged for connection with the pitman of the machine, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the balance-wheel of a sewing-machine, of a pitman connecting with the treadle, a lever, 20, a bar, 22, that is adjustably connected to the frame of the machine, and a link, 26, that is pivotally connected to thelever and to the pitman, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a lever provided with a folding handle that is hinged to the lever, of a bar, 22, that is adjustably con nected to the frame of the machine, a link, 26, a pitman, 16, and a balance-wheel, said link being pivotally connected to the lever and pitman, substantially as described.
