Application July 27, 1953, Serial No. 370,391
1 Claim. (Cl. 2--159) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in gloves or mitts, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character herein described wherein a thumb member of a unique design is attached in a novel manner to the palm member of the glove or mitt so as to result in unusual flexibility, strength and proper fitbecome apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention resides in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a glove constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is an underside plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a developed plan view of the palm member used in the invention;
Figure 4 is a developed plan view of a reinforcing strip used therein;
Figure 5 is a developed plan view of the thumb member;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the glove, the rein- When the palm member 12 is installed in position in the glove, the slit 14, 16 is spread apart so as to form an elongated opening having an arcuate inner edge and an upstanding tab 18 defined by that portion of the palm member 12 within the inner end portion 16 of the slit 14, as shown.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a thumb member 20 which is attached to the palm member 12 so that it is in register with the opening defined by the slit 14, 16, it being observed that the base of the thumb member 20 is provided with a plurality of individually flexible, adjacent tongues 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30.
These tongues alternately underlie and overlie the palm member 12 at the inner end of the opening formed by the slits 14, 16, and are rigidly secured thereto by a line of stitching, as indicated at 32.
By virtue of this arrangement, the attachment of the thumb member to the palm member provides a considerable amount of freedom and flexibility as well as facilitates proper fit of the thumb.
In order to protect and substantially reinforce the connection of the thumb member to the palm member, a reinforcing strip 34, best shown in Figure 4, is stitched to the thumb member and palm member so that it overlies the tongues 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30, the strip 34 being of an angulated or arcuated configuration, so that it may properly extend around and fit the base of the thumb member.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and, accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur pended claim.
forcing strip being partially removed so as to reveal the '1 attachment of the thumb member to the palm member;
and
Figure 7 is a perspective view similar to that shown in Figure 1, but taken from the opposite direction.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the glove or mitt is designated generally by the reference character 10 and includes in its construction a palm member 12 which is provided adjacent one side thereof with a slit 14 terminating in a substantially V-shaped inner end portion 16, as is best shown in Figure 3.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
In a glove or mitt construction, the combination of a palm member provided adjacent one side thereof with an opening formed as an elongated slit having an upturned tab at one end thereof, and a thumb member stitched to said palm member in registry with said opening, said thumb member provided with a plurality of independently flexible tongues formed by inwardly extending slits at the base thereof, certain of said tongues overlying and others underlying the edges of said opening thereby providing a flexible connection between the thumb member and palm member, said upturned tab being disposed at the base of the thumb member, and an arcuate strip being secured to said palm member and base of said thumb member and overlying said tongues and stitching.
