CHAMF'ER STRIP Filed July 20, 1953 Will/Um E. Mfichel/ INVENTOR.
I BY MM 11% United States Patent This. invention relates to.v a chamfer strip. and? particu- "ice 2, copending application, Serial No... 267,044, new Patent No. 2,650,410, filed; January 18,. 1952.
The chamfer strip itself comprises. a. plurality of elements, each, element beingconstructed as an angle: member 20..., and. a. filler, or cover strip 22. The. filler or cover.
- Str p 22 may be inthe, form of; a metallicpstrip. welded. or
otherwise secured across; the, open face of the. channel, or preferably as shown in; Figure; 4,.the, filler may he atria angular wood strip 24. secured within the openface of. the channel by any suitable means.
plurality of chamfer elements. are. developed into i a frame including a. pair of longitudinal frame, member larLy to. a chamfer. strip arranged. as, a fr me to be mounted in. the mold form toprovide. a chamfer atv the top of a casting made. therein.
In the construction; of. concrete structures, in mold forms, it is frequently desirable to provide a chamfer adjacent the, edges; of the casting; s that it. will not require further finishing and so that the edgeswill be quite rigid and strong in operation and not be crumbled away by accidental impact therewith.
In order to prov-idesuchchamfer strips; the presentinvention provides a form. adapted tofit within. a mold form and to. provide a triangular form. adjacent the edge of the finished material. so. that a chamfer will bezfbrmed in the finished casting. This is. accomplished bymeanslof a triangular chamfer strip, with strips; arranged as elements of a frame adapted to slide within the mold form and havingl'oopsor-ears for supporting the frame in position in the mold form and having reinforcing bars extending across the finished frame with the bottoms of the reinforcing bars being elevated out of the plane of the frame so that finishing tools or the like may be readily inserted thereunder. Preferably, the corners of the frame are also cut away or mitred so that perpendicular chamfer strips in the mold may be accommodated therein.
The present application is in part a continuation of applicants copending application, Serial No. 199,293, now Patent No. 2,650,411, filed December 5, 1950.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide an improved chamfer strip.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a chamfer strip arranged as a form or frame to be received in a mold form.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a chamfer strip so arranged that the top of a casting made therein may be readily finished.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a chamfer strip in position in a mold form;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a chamfer strip according to the invention;
Figure 3 is a similar view of a modified chamfer strip;
Figure 4 is a cross-section through an element of the chamfer strip taken substantially on the plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan of a corner of the frame showing the cut-away or mitre to allow the frame to fit in a form having a corner chamfer strip already therein.
In the exemplary embodiment according to the invention, a mold form side constructed of a plurality of channels 10 is spaced from another side of the mold form constructed of a channel 12 having a bulkhead 14 connected across the open side so that it forms a substantially closed device. Such mold forms being disclosed in my 28. and 30 joined together by means of cross, or end members 32 and 34 to provide a substantiallyrectangular frame. to be inserted into the: mold. form as illustrated; in Eigure,,.l. Preferably the. corners of the. device are. rigidly connected. together by welding or the. like. so that. the. frameis. a rigid unitadapted to. be slidinto the top.- of the mold form. Obviously, the frame. instead of being rectangular may be of any desired shape. to fit within a mold. form.
Also, as shown in Figure 3, the frame members. may be; constructed of curved; sidestrips36and. 3.8; having; bends 4.0. and, 42. therein so that the. central portion of the chamfer strip. is elevated above. the end portions 32 and 34. Qbviously, the. chamfer strips maybe provided with more than one; bend 40. and 42,, or the entirestrip maybe. curved from, end to end. to form an arch or other curved surface; if desired Preferably, the corners of the frames,-
are cut away or mitred, as, shown at 48, to-provido. a
cut-away or mit ed. corner to. accommodate avertically extending; chamfer strip. which will. beplaced the main form.
In order to properly locate the chamfer strip in a mold form, a plurality of cars or hanger members are preferably connected in pairs to the frame device, and while any suitable ears may be used, I prefer to use a loop device constructed of a metallic rod bent into narrow U-shaped formation to provide a hanger having a longitudinally extending slot 52 to receive the shank of suitable adjusting bolts. The lower ends of the legs 54 and 56 of the loop 50 are angulated outwardly to provide feet 58 which lie on the top of the element constituting the frame and are rigidly connected thereto by any suitable means, such as welding. Preferably the loop 50 extends upwardly substantially as a continuation of the outer face of the element 20, and is substantially flush therewith. In securing the device in the mold form, the loop 50 will extend adjacent the surface of the mold form and be secured thereto by means of suitable fasten- Y ers such as the bolts 60 which extend through suitable apertures 62 in the mold form and are secured to the loops 50 by means of suitable fasteners such as the nut 64.
The loops 50 are preferably provided in pairs on opposite sides of the framework, and reinforcing bars extend between the legs 54 and 56 of the loops 50 and extend transversely across the framework with the ends of the bars being permanently and rigidly connected to the legs 54 and 56 of the loop by any suitable means such as welding. The underside of the reinforcing bar 70 is cut away as at 74 to provide an arched upwardly bottom surface so that the bottom surface of the reinforcing bar 70 is in upwardly spaced relation to the top surface of the frame. This upwardly arched condition of the reinforcing bar permits a trowel or other working tool to be inserted under the bar to properly finish the top of the casting within the form.
In the operation of the device according to the invention, suitable chamfer strips will be constructed for the standard mold sizes and for the standard mold tops. Preferably the chamfer strip will be of the proper length to fit the shorter mold forms and to be utilized in a larger 3 mold form, the form will simply be cut across and separated to a mold form, and triangular wooden strips or filled metal angles will be inserted between the ends of the cut-apart frame to lengthen it to the desired amount. The frame will be supported at any suitable point in the mold form by means of the bolts 60 inserted in the aperture 62 in the mold form, and tightened so as to be in little danger of displacement during the pouring of the casting. Preferably the chamfer strip will be coated with a transparent plastic, usually in the form of a varnish or paint to protect the outer surface of the material of which the strip is constructed so that it will not rust and so that no undersirable coloration will be transferred from thestrip to the cast material. Also, it is preferable to spray the mold form and the chamfer strip with a light oil immediately previous to constructing 'the casting therein so thatthere will be no danger of sticking or impacting the mold. a
For purposes of exemplification, a particular embodiment of the invention has been shown and described according to the best present understanding thereof. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes and modifications in the arrangement and'construction of the parts thereof may be resorted to without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A chamfer strip for use in a mold form comprising a frame adapted to be positioned in a mold form, said frame being triangular in cross-section, narrow U-shaped hangers, angulated ends on the legs of said hangers, said angulated ends being rigidly secured on the top of the frame, said U-shaped hangers extending substantially flush with the outer edge of said frame.
