Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that'I, TILLIAM H. BLosE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of 'Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use- "fulMold, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molds for use in constructing vaults of concrete.
The ob ect of the invention is to, provlde a mold of this typewhi'ch is cheap to manufacture and which can' be readily assembled so as to form vaults of different proportions. Another object is to provide a mold by the use of which a strong vault for burial purposes and the like, can be quickly constructed within the grave.
A further object is to provide a mold of this type the parts of which can be conven iently removed after the concrete has properly set.
Vith these and other objects in View the invention consists in novel details of construction and the combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the figures by characters ofreference, A designates the base form of the mold, said form consisting of similar side strips 1 and 2 and similar end strips '3 and 4. *Each of the strips is made up of sections having half laps 5 at their ends through which suitable securing devices such as pins 6 are extended, the. pins being provided at their upper ends with eyes 7 constituting means whereby the-pins can be readily withdrawn when it is desired to "disconnect the various sections. The inner form C of the body of the mold is made up of sectional side panels16 and 17, sectional endpanels 18 and19,'and a sectional bottom panel 20. Each of the panels 16, 17 18 and 19 is made up of three sections designated by the letters 0, c, and 0 respectively, the said sections of each being held together by means of side plates Y 21 bolted or otherwise secured thereto. The
heads of the bolts are arranged uponthe outer faces of the panels and flush therewith while the nuts or other means utilized for securing the bolts in place-are disposed upon the inner-faces of the side plates 21 as indicated at 22.
The bottom panel 20 of the form C is made up of longitudinally extending strips 20 which are of the same width as the sections 0, c, 19, each of these strips 20 being subdivided into sections corresponding in length with the sections, 0, c, and c of the side panels 16 and 17 Tie plates 23 are secured to the upper faces of the sections of the bottom .20 and are detachably connected to them in any;preferred manner. The side and end panels ofthe form C are secured together at the corners of said form byv means of angular brackets 24 whichare bolted or otherwise detachably secured in place, and angular brackets 25 are also employed for securing the bottom panel 20 to the side and end panels. All of these brackets are arranged inside the form C and it will be apparent therefore that the outer faces of said form are smooth throughout the extent thereof. As shown in Fig. 1 the larger sections of the inner form may be formed with handles 26 so as to enable them to be conveniently manipulated.
The top form D of the mold is made up of side strips 27 and 28 and end strips 29 and 30, each of the strips being formed of three sections (Z, cl and (Z the ends of the sections being formed with half laps through which coupling or securing pins 31 are extended for the purpose of holding the parts together. Handles 32 may be raised upon the inner faces of the sections to enable said sections to be readily removed upon the completion of the molding operation. The form D is of such a size as to rest upon the upper edges of the inner form C and overhang the space between the inner and outer forms when the parts are assembled.
lVhen it is desired to use the mold a hole of sufficient size is dug into the ground and the bottom thereof is leveled so as to permit the form A to be placed flat thereon. The space that is surrounded by the form is then filled with concrete, this concrete being smoothed off level with the upper face of the form. After the concrete has set the form A is removed by detaching the sections of the strips constituting it and the outer form B of the body is placed upon the bottom of the hole and around the molded vault bottom, the lower edges of the panels of said form B resting upon that portion of the bottom of the hole on .which the form A formerly was located. It is of course to be understood that the various panels constituting the form B are to be assembled after they have been placed within the hole. After the form B has been set up the inner form C is also set up, the bottom panel 20 being placed upon the molded base of the vault and the side and end panels being attached to each other and to the bottom panel and at equal distances from the corresponding panels of the outer form B. The space between the inner and outer forms is then tilled with concrete up to the level of the upper edges of the inner form C. After the concrete has been properly tapped the top form D is assembled and placed upon the upper edges of the inner form C and concrete is then poured around the form I) and leveled off flush with the up face of the said form. After the concrete has properly set the form D is removed by detaching the sections thereof and a rabbet 33 will thus be formed in the molded walls of the vault. By detaching theplates 21 and 23 and by removing the brackets 24 and 25, the various sections constituting the wall and bottom panels of the inner form C can be removed from the molded vault and then, by detaching the plates 12 and the angle irons 15 the panels of the outer form B can also be removed. Dirt can then be filled in around the walls of the vault and said vault will be ready for use. By providing the bottom panel of the inner mold, the concrete which has already been placed within the mold to constitute the bottom of the vault, is prevented from pushing upward into the inner mold when additional concrete is placed between the side and end walls of the inner and outer molds. Moreover, this bottom panel constitutes a floor on which the operators may stand without danger of mutilating the freshly deposited concrete.
hen it is desired to seal the vault top panels such as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 are preferably employed. Each of these panels is formed of concrete and consists of a body 34 of sufficient length to rest within the rabbet 33, the panels being so proportioned that when a predetermined number of them have been placed within the rabbet they will completely close the top of the vault. Each of the panels, with the exception of the end ones has a longitudinally extending lip 35 along the upper portion of one edge and another longitudinally extending lip 36 along the lower portion of the opposite edge. When the panels are assembled upon the vault these lips will lap and cement can subsequently be placed upon the panels at the joints and also within the rabbets and around the edge portions of the panels so as to completely seal the interior of the vault. Metal handles 27 may be attached to the panels to facilitate the manipulation thereof.
By constructing a mold in the manner described it will be apparent that by leaving off one or more sections of each of the panels the size of the molded vault will be smaller than when all of the sections are utilized. It will thus be seen that by the use of one mold different sizes of vaults may be conveniently produced in the manner described.
It is of course to be understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of its parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
