"UNITED ISTATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES, HANSON, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO. FREDERICK APPELQUIST, SAME PLAGE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming pere ef Letters Patent No. 271,844, dated February eusse.
Application inea oeteber 19, tese. (Medel.)
To all whom t't 'may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES HnNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the-countyot" Rock Island and State 5 of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinPlows; and Idolierebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- 'act description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part iigures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l ot' the drawings is a side elevation of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a top plan view thereof;
the wheel-colterand attachments; and Fig. 4, a detail view, partly in section, ot' the coupling pin and link.
The present invention has relation to certain y zo new and useful improvements in lplows, and
refers more particularly to that class for which a patent was granted to me September 19, 1882, No. 264,828.
The invention consists in the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed'.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the plow constructed substan tially in the mann'er described and claimedininy formerpatent.
3o ,'l the-standard B is pivoted an extension, C, having near its Vlower end a curved slot, a, through which passes a clamping-screw, b, and also through a screw-threaded hoe iu the standard.
The extension C, which I shall term a support," has its lower edge curved to conform to the segmental shoulder c upon the standard B, and at its upper end has secured to it or formed with a wide bearing-plate, D, for supporting 4o the plow-beam E. This plate D has rigidly connected to it an upwardly-,projecting bolt, d,
for fastening to the plate the plow-beam by a. nut, e, engaging with the screw-threaded end ot the bolt, said bolt passing up through a hole 45 in the plow-beam. The plate D is formed at its rear end with a curved slot,f, through which passes a headed screw-bolt, g, said bolt also passing up through ahole in the plow-beam E, and has upon its end a nut, h. The plow- 5o beam E, at its extreme rear end, terminates in 'a slotted extension, l, by which it is connected by clamping-screw m to the'side of one of` the 5 plow-handles Gr. v By the above-described manner of supporting and attaching the plow-beam its height can be regulated by loosening the clampingscrews b m, which will admit of the support U 6o being moved on its pivot in a direction either to the right or left, describing the arc of a circle. The plow-beam can be also movedan d adjusted laterally in either direction by ,loosening the clamping-screw k and the nuts e h upon the bolts d g. When the plow-beam is adjust-y ed tothe proper position it is rmly held stationary by tightening theclamping-screws and nuts against their bearings. Y
The wheel-colter H is swiveled to an arm, 7c, n, which has a screw-threaded hole for the passage of a screw-rod, I. This screw-rod hasits l bearings in a right-angle plate, K, in such manner as to admit of its freely turning therein and causing the arm n to travel upon the screw-threaded portion ot' the rod. The angleplate K has a horizontal slot, p, and upright or vertical slotlq, the i'ormer serving as a guide to the arm n, the arm passing through the slot and moving horizontally therein by turning 8o the screw-rod. The .upright portion ot' the l angle-plate K is held to a bracket, r, by clamping-screw s, the angle-plate having daring sides to correspond in form to a dovetail slot in said bracket, an'din which the upright por- 85 vtion ot' the plate rests. The bracket r, if desired, may have elongated slots at its ends to admit of its adjustment on the plow-beam by the usualclamping-screws passing through the slots and beam. o
The construction as above described admits of the colter H being set to the right or left, raised or lowered, as found desirable.
To the slotted end t of' the `plow-beam E is pivoted a weighted coupling-pin, L, for holdingin engagement therewith a suitable link,
M, to which the draft-chain is connected.
The manner ot' coupling is entirely automatic, dispensing with the usual clevis. The link, as it is forced in the slotted endof the too beam', raises the weighted pin as it enters to the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 4, when it will fall back to its vnormal position, and in doing so enter the link and couple it to the plow-beam.
The handle G at the right-hand side of the plow .is bolted to the mold-board of the plow by the brace u, and to the under side of a lateral brace, '0, while the handle at the lefthand side of the plow is bolted .to the land-v sidc-plate, forming a verystrong and durable connection between the handles and plow.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byl Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a plow-beam and a Wheel-colter swiveled to alaterall y-ad j nstable standard-plate, oi' the angle-plate K, having slots p q, the traveling screw I, and a fastening device for holding the angleplate adjusted to the plow-beam, substantially'as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The plow-beam E, having at its rear end a transverse slot, i, ink combi-nation with the slotted standard-extension C, formed with bearing-plate D, and adjustably connected to the standard B, and the plate F, having the slotted lextension l, substantially as and fox` the purlfor the-purpose set forth.
.4. The colter H, swiveled to the'arm n, in
combination with the vertically-adjustablel angle-plate K and screw-rod I, constructed to operate substantiallyras and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the aboverI have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
. CHARLES HANSON.
