3 Claims. (Cl. 153-202) This invention relates to paint brushes and more particularly to extensions which can be added to ordinary paint brushes to increase the width thereof so that it will not be necessary to provide several paint brushes of different widths for different painting operations.

lt is among the objects of the invention to provide extensions which can be detachably secured onto ordinaryI paint brushes to increase the width thereof so that the same brush can be used for painting woodwork, walls and ceilings and for other painting operations; which includes extensions of the same width for broth sides of a brush to maintain the brush in a balanced condition; which includes means which rrnly clamp the extensions to an associated brush; which may provide extensions of different widths to provide different width brushes from the same brush to which the extensions are added; and which are simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture, easy to apply, and effective and emcient in use.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claims in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure l is a front or face elevational view of a paint brush with paint brush extensions illustrative of the invention mounted thereon;

Figure 2 is a transverse cross sectional View on the line 2 2 of Figure l;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line 3 3 of Figure 2; and

Figure 4 is a perspective View of one paint brush extension and an associated clamp for attaching the extension to a paint brush.

With continued reference to the dravving, the paint brush, generally indicated at ll, is of weil known construction and includes a body portion il having at and substantially parallel faces and

12 and 13 which are convexly curved transversely thereof, as illustrated in Figure 2. The brush has a handle 14 extending from one end of the body portion il and bristles l5 secured to the other end of the body portion and extending longitudinally therefrom, the bristles being secured at their ends attached to the body portion l1 in a ilange or band 16 which extends marginally around the corresponding end of the brush and projects longitudinally therefrom.

The extensions, generally indicated at l and l, are disposed one at each side of the brush l() and include solid body portions 2i) and 2l respectively of a length substantially equal to the length of the body portion 1l of the brush and bristles, as indicated at 22 and 23 respectively, extending from one end of each of the body portions 20 and 2l and having a length substantially equal to the length of the bristles l5 of the brush 10. 22 and 23 are secured at their ends attached to the corresponding portions 2% and 21 in anges or bands, as indicated at 24, which extend marginally around the end of the corresponding body portion and project ICC longitudinally from the latter a distance substantially equal to the distance which the band 16 projects from the body portion 1l of the brush 10.

12 and 13 of the brush body 11 and each has rows of pin holes, as indicated at 27 and 28 for the body 26 and at 29 for the body 2l, extending transversely of the opposite faces thereof with the holes in each row spaced apart transversely of the corresponding body face. The two rows of holes in each body are in alignment transversely of the body but the holes in one body are displaced longitudinally of the body from the holes in the other body for a purpose which will presently appear, the holes in the body 2li being nearer the end of the body from which the bristles 22 project than the holes 29 in the body 21.

U-shaped clamps, as generally indicated at 3i) and 31, extend one around each of the extension bodies 2t) and 21 and across the faces of the body li of the brush lll in spaced apart and substantially parallel relationship to each other, as illustrated in Figure l.

The U-shaped clamps Sli and Si are formed of resilient strap material, such as spring steel, and each has a pair of straight and substantially parallel legs, as indicated at 32 and 33 for the clamp 3G and an arcuately curved bight or intermediate portion 34 at one end which intermediate portion tits around the convexly curved outer side edge of the corresponding extension body.

32 and 33 at the ends of the legs remote from the intermediate portion 34 and the intermediate portion has a part 37 cut out along three sides and bent inwardly of the clamp to bear against the outer side edge of the corresponding extension body portion.

The clamp 39 is mounted on the brush assembly with the closed end portion thereoic extending around the body portion 2l) of the extension l and with its legs extending along the respectively opposite faces of the body portion il of the brush l@ substantially parallel to the end of the body portion 11 from which the bristles l5 project. The pins at the end of the clamp 3l) remote from the intermediate portion thereof are received in selected apertures 29 in the body portion 2l of the extension i9, the apertures being selected so that the clamp lits tightly around the brush body and the body 2i) of the extension 18 with the inwardly inclined portion of its bight bearing lirmly against the outer side edge of the body 2li. The clamp 3l at its closed end extends around the body 21 of the extension 19 with its inwardly inclined part 37 bearing against the outer side edge of the body 2l and with its

35 and 36 received in selected holes 27 and 2S in the body 2Q of the extension 1S and is disposed substantially parallel to the clamp 39 and between the clamp 3S and the ends of the brush and the extension bodies from which the bristles extend.

With this arrangement the extensions can be added to the brush at the opposite sides of the latter or removed from the brush as changes in the painting operations may require so that a brush of the proper width for each operation is provided without the necessity of having7 available a number of brushes of different widths. The extensions may also be provided in diiferent widths so that one pair of extensions can be added to a narrow brush to provide a brush of intermediate width and a diiferent pair of extensions can be added to a narow brush to provide a wide brush.

The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restricembraced therein.

What is claimed is:

1. In combination with a paint brush having side edges convexly ycurved transversely thereof, an extension assembly comprising extensions members disposed one at each side of said brush and each including aV solid body portion having one side edge concavely curved transversely thereof and receiving a corresponding side edge of said brush and bristles extending from one end thereof along the bristlesof said brush, each of said body portions having holes in the opposite faces thereof and U- shaped ciamps extending one around each extension member body portion and extending across the opposite faces of said brush, each of said clamps having pins projecting Yinwardly from the legs thereof adjacent the open end thereof and received in holes in the extension member remote from the extension member which the correspond- -ing clamp extends around to firmly secure said extensionV members to said brush.

' 2. In combination with a paint brush having side edges convexly curved'transversely thereof, an extension assembly comprising extension members disposed one at each side of said brush and each including a solid body portion having one side edge concavely curved transversely thereof and receiving a corresponding side edge of said brush and bristles'extending from one end thereof along the bristles of said brush, each of said body portions' having holes in the opposite faces thereof and VU-shaped clamps extending one around each extension member body portion and extending across the opposite faces of said brush, each of said clamps having pins projecting inwardly from the legs thereof adjacent the open end thereof and received in holes in the extension member remote from the extension member which the corresponding clamp extends around to firmly secure said extension members to said rush, and each of said clamps being formed of resilient strap material and shaped to firmly maintain the pins thereof in the corresponding holes in the associated extension body portions.

3. In combination with a paint brush havingY side edges convexly curved transversely thereof, an extension' assembly cornprising extension members disposed one at each side of said brush and each including a solid body portion having one side edge concavely curved transversely thereof and receiving a corresponding side edge of said brush and bristles extending from one end thereof along the bristles of said brush, each of said body portions having holes in the Yopposite faces thereof and U-shaped clamps exte: lling one around each extension member body portion and extending across the opposite faces of said brush, each of said clamps having pins projecting inwardly from the legs thereof adjacent the open end thereof and rer ceived in holes in the extension member remote from the extension member which the corresponding clamp extends around to firmly secure said extension members to said brush, and each of said clamps being formed of resilient strap material and shaped to firmly maintainV the pins thereof in the corresponding holes in the associated extension body portions and having a part struck out of its intermediate portion and inwardly directed to bear against the outer side edge of the extension body portion which it extends around.
