7 Claims. (Cl. 16-86) This invention relates generally to a door stop, and more particularly to a device for preventing the doorknob of a door from coming into contact with an associated wall when the door is opened, and for retarding the slamming of the door when the same is being closed. 3 The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved door stop which in its inoperative position closely overlies the door to which it is attached, and is sprin urged to a position normal to the door when the same is opened. I
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved door stop having an arm adapted to extend rear wardly, said arm having on its rearwardly extending end a resilient stop member for engagement with an associated wall, the length of the arm being such that a doorknob carried by the door is prevented from striking the wall.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved door step adapted to be secured to a conventional swinging door and having associated therewith a striker, plate adapted to be secured to the associated door frame. Another object of this invention is to provide an improved door stop of simple construction so as to be economically feasible and which may be readily attached to any conventional door. v A further object of this invention is to provide an' irnproved door stop which is provided with spring means resisting the slamming of the door with which the door stop is associated.
With these objects definitely in view, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention which will later become apparent as the following do scription proceeds, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement ot' elements and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail in the specification, particularly pointed out-Sin the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the novel door stop, which is the subject of this invention, is illustrated as being attached to a conventional door 10. The door is provided with a recess 12 in its free edge 14 adjacent the bottom thereof. The inner face 16 of the door 10 is also provided with a shallow recess 18 in alignment with the recess 12.
The novel door stop includes a hinge plate referred to generally by the reference numeral 20, and a pivoting member hingedly secured thereto, the pivoting member being referred to generally by the reference numeral 22. The hinge plate 20 includes a first flange 24 parallel to the ,face 16 of the door 10 and seated within the shallow recess 18 therein. The flange 24 is provided with a plurality of spaced apertures 26 in which are received countersunk screws 28 which secure the flange to the face 16 of the door. Integralwith the first flange 24 and extending normal thereto is a second flange 30 which isreceived within the recess 12 and overlies the edge of the door'illl within 'the recess. The opposite edge of the second flange 30 is provided with a narrow third flange '32 integrally connected thereto, as hereinafter describedwhieh is parallel to the first flange 24 and extends in an opposite direction thereto from the second flange 30. Integral with the third flange 32 and extending parallel to the second flange 30 is a fourth flange 34. The fourth flange 34 overlies the edge of the door 10 within the recess 12 and is secured thereto by a plurality of screws 36 passing through aper rates 38 therein.
In order that the hinge plate 20 may function as same, the second flange 30 is provided adjacent the third flange 32 with a pair of 'spaced hinge fingers 40. The hinge fingers 40 are formed by removing a central portion of the second flange 36 so as to have an edge portion secured to the major portion thereof by upper and lower strap portions. The upper and lower strapportions are then bent to form substantially cylindrical shaped portions in alignment with each other, the cylindrical shaped portions being referred to as the hinge fingers 40.
The pivoting member 22 includes a flange portion 42 and an arm 44 at right angles thereto. The free end of the flange portion 42 is provided with a central hinge finger 46 which is received between the hinge fingers 40 of thehinge plate 20 and secured, in alignment thereto by a hinge pin 48. As is clearly illustrated in Figure 2, when the flange portion 42 is normal to the second flange portion 30 of the hinge plate 20, the flange portion 42 abuts the third flange 32, and as viewed in Figure 2, further counterclockwise rotation is prevented.
The arm portion 44 is substantially triangular in shape and is provided with an offset end portion 50. Rigidly secured on the end portion 50 is a resilient stop member 52.formed of rubber-like material which is adapted to engage a wall and prevent the engagement of a doorknob (not shown.) carried by the door 10 with said wall. By referring to Figure 2', it will be seen that the primary purpose of the offset portion 50 is to provide clearance between the door 10 and the stop member 52. I I The pivoting member 22 is urged to the position illustrated inFigure 1 by a pair of springs 54 which have central loop portions 56 engaged over the hinge pin 48. The loop portions 56 are positioned between the hinge finger 46 and the hinge fingers 40. Each spring 54 has a pair of legs 58 diverging from the loop portion 56 with each leg portion having anor't'set portion 60 adjacent its free endh The flanges 30 and 42 are provided with spaced horizontal slots 62,and 64, respectively, in substantial alignment with the ends of their associated hinge fingers.
To insure proper engagement of the legs 58 of the springs- 54 with the flanges 30 and 42, the offset portions of the legs are disposed within their respective slots 62 and 64. Referring now to Figures 2 and 4 in particular, it will be seen that associated with the door is a door frame 62. The door frame is provided with a recess 65 in its door opposing face 66 in alignment with the recess 12 in the edge 14 of the door 10. Secured in the recess 65 by screws 68 is the striker plate 70 which is flush with the surface of the door opposing face 66. The striker plate 70 is provided with a lip portion 72 at an angle to the main portion thereof and extending outwardly from the door frame 62.
As is illustrated in Figure 3, when the door 10 is in its closed position abutting the stop strip 74 carried by the door frame 62, the flange 42 is maintained in a position parallel to the second flange 30 of the hinge plate by engagement with the striker plate 70. The arm 44 is also maintained in spaced parallel relation to the flange 24 and the face 16 of the door 10.
.When the door 10 is partially opened and has reached the position illustrated in Figure 2, the pivoting member 22 has been urged to the position shown by the springs 54 carried by the pivot pin 48. It is readily apparent that the stop member 52 on the pivoting member 22 is now in position to engage the wall adjacent the hinge edge of the door with which the door 10 would otherwise contact. As stated above, further counterclockwise rotation of the pivoting member '22 is prevented byengagement of its flange 42 with the flange 32 of the hingeplate 20. When the door 10 is in the process of being closed, the
door freely swings towards the door frame 62 until the flange 42 of the pivoting member22 engages the lip 72 of the striker plate 70. It is then necessary to rotate the flange 42 about the pivot pin 48 and against the resistance of the springs 54 in order to continue closing the door 10. It is obvious that the resistance against swinging of the flange 42 due to the urging of the springs 54 retards the slamming of the door 10. When the door 10 is moved to its completely closed position, the flange 42 is continued to be rotated clockwise by engagement with the lip 72 and the main portion of the striker plate 70 until it has assumed the position illustrated in Figure 3..
Since, from the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device is readily apparent, furtherdescription is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications and equivalents will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the exact embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to l. 2. For use with a door construction including a door frame having a door mounted therein for swinging movement, one edge of said door being hinged for pivotal movement only, a combined door stop and buffer at- H opposite from said one edge to a position normal there to, a striker plate carried by said door frame for engagement with said member for pivoting same to said overlying position, and a spring for urging said member into a position whereby it is normal to said free edge of the door.
3. For use with a door construction including a door frame having a door mounted therein for swinging movement, one edge of said door being hinged for pivotal movement only, a combined door stop and buffer attachment comprising a hinge plate secured to said door, a memberpivotally secured to said hinge plate for movement from a position overlying a free edge of said door opposite from said one edge to a position normal thereto, and a striker plate carried by said door frame for engagement with said member for pivoting same to said overlying position, said member including a flange and an integral arm, a free edge of said flange being hingedly secured to said hinge plate, a free end of said arm having mounted thereon a resilient stop element.
4. For use with a door construction including a door frame having a door mounted therein for swinging movement,- one edge of said door being hinged for pivotal movement only, a combined door stop and buffer attachment comprising a hinge plate secured to said door, a member pivotally secured to said hinge plate for movement from a position overlying a free edge of said door I opposite from said one edge to a position normal thereto, and a striker plate carried by said door frame for engagement with said member for pivoting same to said overlying position, said member including a flange and an integral arm, a free edge of said flange being hingedly secured to said hinge plate, a free end of said arm having mounted thereon a resilient stop element, said flange overlying said free edge of the door and said arm being parallel to a face of said door when said door is in a closed position.
