CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 271,106, dated January 23,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN J. OGONNOR and RALPH M. WHITE, of Wellsville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gar-(Joupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of ourinvention is to provide simple and efficient couplings especially adapted for freight-cars, which can be readily applied in place of the ordinary draw-heads without requiring alterations in the cars, and also that can be used with the ordinary draw-head, and, further, to construct such couplings so that they may be operated from the top of the car or at the side of the car.
To these ends our invention consists in hooked coupling-bars, constructed and arranged for operation as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly sectional, showing our coupling devices as applied to the cars. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the cars and couplings.
The coupling-hooks or draw-bars are placed upon the cars A A in place of the usual draw heads and bars.
B B are the draw-bars, formed with double hooks a at their outer ends, of spear-head form, the taper or bevel of the heads being upon the upper and under side, so that when two cars are brought together the hooks shall pass one above the other and engage by their shoulders. The draw-bars B are formed at their rear ends with shanks or spindles b, that extend through slots in'plates c c, that are sustained transversely of the car by brackets d (3, attached to the bottom of the car. These plates 0 are loose, and on the stem b, between these plates, are spiral springs, e, which serve as bulfers and draW-sprin gs. The forward ends of the draw-bars B are supported by brackets f, and at one side of the draw-bars is attached a spring, 9, which tends to retain the bars in a central position horizontally, and there are also upon the upper side of the draw- I bars springs h, which act to press the bars downward and retain the hooks in engagement.
Upon the ends of the cars are fitted vertical rods z, formed with cranks at their lower ends, and connected by rods to the draw-bars B; and the rods t' are provided with handles 1 I, by which they may be turned, and the drawbars thus moved sidewise out of position for engagement with each other. One handle on the rod is placed at the upper end for operation by a brakeman at the top ot'the car, while the other is placed at a convenient height for operation at the bottom of the car.
Upon one end of each draw-bar 1B is fitted by a brace, 0, a socket, m, of a form for receiving an ordinary link, and through this socket is an aperture for receiving the coupling-pin. When the draw-bar is drawn at one side and locked by means of the hook at or other device the socket m is brought in position for receiving a link from an opposite car. This allows the couplings to be used with cars having draw-heads of ordinary form.
These coupling devices allow for considerable variation in the height of the cars. They can be applied to a car after the ordinary drawbar is removed,and being of simple and durable construction there is no liability of their getting out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ,Patent, is
1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-bar B, of the socket m, extending from one side ofsaid bar, said draw-bar being adapted to be swung laterally to bring the socket m in line with the coupling-link of the approaching car, as set forth.
2. In a c a-r-coupling, the combination, with the spring draw-bar B, of the laterally-projecting socket m and the means for holding the draw-bar out of action and the socket m in line with the coupling-link of the approaching car, as set forth.
