CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION`forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,085, dated January 23, 1883.
Application mea November 8,1882. (No model.)
[o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN P. LANCASTER, a citizen ot the UnitedStates, and a resident of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part ot" this specitcation, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure'l of the drawings is a vertical sectional View of my carcoupling. Fig. 2 is a front view ot' the coupling-pin detached from the draw-head. Fig.3 is aside view, and Fig. 4 is a top or plan View, of the same.
This invention has relation to automatic carcouplers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a draw-head, whereof B is the linkchamber, having a slot, C, extending longitudinally in its top, and D is an upper chamber above the slotted top, having an open front and bearings E in the front edges ot' its side walls. In the rear wall of the cavity of the draw-head which receives the link are formed transverse recesses g and g above'and below a transverse rib, h.. Projecting lugs Zon the top ofthe upper chamber ot' the draw-head are formed with oblique slots k, forming bearings for thejournais m of the angular fastening N, said journals being kept in position by the removable pins or screws n. When the angular fastening is in place its toe is engaged with a recess, r, in the top t ot' the draw head in front of the chamber D.
P represents the T shaped coupling pin, which is formed with a cross-head, c, and a depending portion, b, the rear edge of which is in its lower portion curved in convex form, as indicated at c. VTo place the pin in position in the draw-head the fastening N is removed, the pins or screws n having been withdrawn from its bearings, and the depending portion of the pin is passed through the open front of the upper chamber, down through the slot C into the link chamber, the arms or journals z of the cross-head engaging the seats or bearings E at the front ofthe chamber D. Then the fastening N is replaced and secured in position, and it serves to prevent the pin from being casually removed from the draw-head. The crosshead of the piu is provided with a depending lateral arm, G, which hangs downward at the vside of the draw head, and is designed to be connected by a cord or chain, e, to a lever conveniently attached to the car, so that the pin can be vibrated backward to liberate the link in uncoupling. The cavity ot' the draw-head is enlarged back ofthe beveled mouth M,above and below, andv the shoulders m forni strong abutments for the pin. The lower shoulder also serves as a fulcruin on which the link may rest, its rear end being held against the bottom `of the cavity by the convex rear edge of the pin, so that the outer end ot' the link is held in a raised position to couple with a high drawgage the upper recess, g, or the lower recess,
gv', at the back of the lin k-cavity, and may thus be held with its outer end in a depressed orA raised position.
When the end of a link enters a coupler of this character the pin 'will be vibrated back ward until lthe end of the link passes under its lower extremity. The pin will then swing' forward through the slot of the link into the position of engagement.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A draw head having an open front upper chamber, D, above the link-chamber, and communicating therewith by the longitudinal slot G,in combination with the removable T-shaped swinging pin P, journaled at the open front, as
shown, and the removable fastening N, substantially as specitied.
1n testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN P. LANCASTER.
