SHOW BOX FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
No. 271,081. Patented Ja11.23, 1883.
- WITNiSSSES:
rrrcn,
PATENT EDiVARD M. KELLY, OF PARKERS LANDING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOW-BOX FOR BOOTSAND SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,081, dated January 23, 18523, Application filed October 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. KELLY, of Parkers Landing, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Boxes for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved boot and shoe boxopen, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both. figures.
My invention has relation to show-boxes for boots and shoes; and it consists in the improved oonstruction of such a box, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, theletterA represents a box of any desired capacity, though it is preferable to make the boxes capable of containing one dozen pairs of shoes or boots.
The body of the boxis divided longitudinally into compartments by partitions B, which compartments are again subdivided into sub-compartments by partitions C, fitting in grooves D in the partitions B.
The partitions B are held in place by wedgeshaped end pieces, E,which are provided with grooves F on the inside, in which the ends of the partitions B fit, while their wedge shape allows them to be driven in and hold the partitions Btightly in place.
At the sides of the box are similar wedgeshaped side pieces, G, provided with grooves H for the partitions O to slide in, which in a similar manner hold the partitions G fast, thus,
in connection with the end pieces, E, holding all the partitions in place.
The edges of thepartitions B, facing the open side of the box, are provided with suitable re cesses b-one for each compartment-for the reception of a card or label with the number of the size and price of the shoe marked on it. The open side of the box isprovided with a hinged lid, I, consisting of a frame, J, and a glass plate, K. To hold the lid at a right angle with the open side of the box to form a shelf, chains or arched or knee-jointed rods box. W'hen the lid is down in this manner, the box being placed on a shelter on the counter of the store, it will provide a shelfforplacing the shoes on while showing them, and to prevent the possibility of the glass panel being broken by placing the shoes on it a metal grating, L M, is fastened over it. This grate consists of longitudinal bars L and cross-bars M, the ends of which are placed in the frame of the lid in recesses N, and secured by turnbuttons 0. The longitudinal bars will, when the lid is closed, register with the partitions B, while the cross-bars will register with the partitions C, so that the grating will not interfere with the view from the outside of the contents of the box and still aEt'ord protection for the glass plate K when down.
To protect the glass during transportation, the lid is provided with an outside shutter, P.
For the purpose of showing the numbers of the shoes or boots contained in the box when the lid is closed and the shutteris placed over the glass, the upper edge of the box is provided with recesses a for the insertion of cards or labels with the numbers of the shoes or boots contained in the row underneath the card or label.
The box may, if desired, be made of pasteboard and paper, with the exception of the wedge-shaped side and end pieces, E and G, which are made of wood and serve as a strengthening-framefor the box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States i i 1. A showbox for boots and shoes, consisting of the body A, divided into compartments by partitions B and G, the said partitions held in place by the wedge-shaped side and end pieces, E and G, the horizontal partitions B being provided with recesses I) for cards orlabels for marking the number, size, and price partment, and the upper edge of the casing A having recesses a for cards or labels for may be fastened to the lid and the ends of the of the shoes or boots contained in each com= ICC marking the number of the shoes contained in the row below, as set forth.
2. A show-box for boots and shoes, consist-- ing of the body A, having its upper edge provided with recesses a for cards or labels for marking, and provided with longitudinal partitions B, grooved at D for the reception of the partitions G, and provided with cards, 1abels, or other marking means b, the ends of the said partitions fitting into grooves F and H of thewedge-shaped side and end pieces, E and Gr, by which they are held in place, and l the hinged lid I, consisting of a frame, J, provided with recesses N and turn-buttons O, for the reception of the grating L M, glass plate 15 K, and shutter P, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signaturein presence of two Witnesses.
